Thanks, Pharma. You created the “anti-vaccine movement”. | Gianelloni Family. I love that when a nonsense article floats around on facebook, everyone who knows me, sends it to me. But here I am, with a few hours to spare in my hotel room, and what am I doing….refuting the article. I’ve been researching the measles vaccine for 8 years now and have written many posts on this subject. So here we go…..again. I have to remind myself that my passion and heart is truly to educate and empower other mothers. The article begins with: “There is currently an outbreak of measles in New York City.

Let’s break this down. Right away, the original article links to other articles. The first linked article is titled: “New measles cases confirmed in New York City”. Are you ready for what comes next? First sentence: “New York City health officials have identified 3 more cases of measles” “Five hospitalizations have occurred as a result of this outbreak” Blessing Way. A Blessing Way was traditionally a Navajo Ritual created to spiritually support and empower the new mother for her journey of birthing and motherhood. In recent times, this beautiful Ritual has been adapted as an alternative to Baby Showers, where the focus tends to be more on the gifts and the baby, rather than on the Mother and her experience. There is a lot of information on the web and wonderful books that you can buy that can give you great ideas about how to create one for the new mamma in your life, whether friend, sister, daughter, relative.

I will list some ideas below but really, just have fun and make them your own. Here is are somes excerpt from the wonderful book by Yana Cortlund, Barb Lucke and Donna Miller Watelet, Mother Rising: The Blessing Way Journey into Motherhood: “If creating a Blessingway ritual seems at all daunting to you right now, we empower you to explore this idea in any way that feels right. As women, we need eachother, more than we know….

If I asked you which of these vitamins was found naturally in food, folate or folic acid, would you know the answer? If not, you’re in good company. Medical professionals, nutrition experts, and health practitioners frequently mix up the two, simply because the terms are often used interchangeably. Many health professionals would even argue that folate and folic acid are essentially the same nutrient. Erykah Badu To Become Midwife! Why We Need More Black Midwives & Doulas. : Kimberly Seals Allers' Mocha Manual. Posted by kimberly on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 · 5 Comments I was so excited to learn that Erykah Badu wants to become a midwife. I wasn't surprised though, since I've been watching her spokesperson work with the International Center for Traditional Childbearing–an amazing organization run by an equally amazing woman, Shafia Monroe.

Shafia and I got to know each other through my work with the Black Maternal Health project. (Please check out the info on ICTC's upcoming Black Midwives & Healers Summit in Mississippi) I've always been a huge supporter of midwives, particularly related to their powerful role in helping black women have full term babies, fewer C-sections and in reducing infant mortality. I know it's important work. I remembered a post I wrote for my SisterSpace column on WomenseNews about the importance of midwifery and doulas. But, why? After all knowledge is power. So when a woman who has had a midwife is told she needs to be induced. These are key pieces to the puzzle. Cesarean Section - A Brief History home page.
