How to make it in Africa? Unilever listens to the consumer
“There is a growing realisation that the future of Africa is based around a consumer rather than mining. This is a consumer that has been under-served and over-charged,” said Frank Braeken, Unilever executive vice-president for Africa at the High Growth Markets Summit at the end of September 2011. Frank Braeken Unilever, a consumer goods company, has over a century of experience on the continent and produces annual sales of more than 5 billion euros in Africa. The group employs 40,000 people in the region and has offices and factories in 40 locations.

Grameen Danone launched in 2006 on a proposal by the bangladeshi economist, Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus. Their aim is to produce yogurt with all the micronutrients which are missing fromt the typicall diet of the children and sell them very cheap so that the poorest children can afford and buy them. This is a fragment of a speech of Mister Yunus which I reccommend everybody who wants to recognize the difference between social business and charity.

The institution he has developed, the Grameen Foundation, is well known for having strived to help the world’s poorest people lift themselves out poverty through a model that sounded original. Muhammed Yunus fostered the concept of microfinance, democratizing the access to capital, thus helping his peers (mainly women) to develop small businesses as a weapon to fight against their wretchedness. Avec deux autres gangsters de MakeSense , j’ai été choisi pour être dans le top30 des jeunes de moins de 25 ans à suivre en 2012 (pour leurs efforts dans le cadre du social business). Le 18 novembre, le Prix Nobel de la Paix Muhammad Yunus a donné un discours sur le social business (économie solidaire) devant la Commission Européenne, à Bruxelles. Dans le discours introductif d'une session intitulée "Économie solidaire et innovation sociale", Yunus a plaidé pour le développement de l'économie sociale en Europe et a souligné l'échec de la civilisation actuelle à résoudre les problèmes de pauvreté, de chômage, de dégradation de l'environnement et de la santé.
