Writing a Grant Application: A "Technical" Checklist

Is it premature? Should you write that paper first? Plan ahead and don't rush -- give yourself 2-3 months to prepare the grant. Specific Aims Do the aims address interesting and significant issues? Background Clear, well organized -- use subheadings where possible. Preliminary Results Draw as much as possible on your past productivity; emphasize how your previous work leads up to the present proposal or at least demonstrates feasibility of methods to be used.

Experimental Design This IS one of the most common places where the text is insufficient. Timetable Not a futile exercise, although it does not need to take up an inordinate amount of space. Common Mistakes in NIH Applications. The five review criteria for most NIH grant applications are: Significance, approach, innovation, investigator, and environment.

Common Mistakes in NIH Applications

Innovation is not necessary, but the results should have compelling significance. Common Mistakes: Problems with significance: Not significant nor exciting nor new research Lack of compelling rationale Incremental and low impact research Problems with specific aims: Too ambitious, too much work proposed Unfocused aims, unclear goals Limited aims and uncertain future directions Problems with experimental approach: Inappropriate level of experimental detail Feasibility of each aim not shown Little or no expertise with approach Lack of appropriate controls Not directly testing hypothesis Correlative or descriptive data Experiments not directed towards mechanisms No discussion of alternative models or hypotheses No discussion of potential pitfalls No discussion of interpretation of data Problems with investigator: Problems with environment: Inadequate institutional support. Statement of Commitment to New and Early Stage Investigators New investigators are the innovators of the future - they bring fresh ideas and technologies to existing biomedical research problems, and they pioneer new areas of investigation.

New and Early Stage Investigator Policies

Entry of new investigators into the ranks of independent, NIH-funded researchers is essential to the health of this country’s biomedical research enterprise. NIH’s interest in the training and research funding of new investigators is understandably deep and longstanding. Over the years, special programs to assist new investigators in obtaining independent research funding have been created (see History of Commitment on these pages). In spite of concerted efforts over several decades, the average age at which an investigator first obtains R01 funding increased by five to six years between 1980 and 2001. As always, I welcome your ideas in this regard. Sally Rockey, PhD, Deputy Director for Extramural Research, NIH [Return to Top] Standard Due Dates for Competing Applications.
