A Visual Tour Through the Basics of Social Media Marketing. I've been asked several times to give presentations on the basics of social media marketing, and have now refined my 15 minute introductory tour to the point where I think it's fairly good (and I'm really damn picky about my presentations). The following presentation (in visual and text form) should be helpful for anyone trying to convince their bosses, team or cohorts that investing in SMM is a worthwhile pursuit. Enjoy! What differentiates Rally Up from the likes of Foursquare and Gowalla is that it has a strong focus on privacy and content sharing. Rally Up bills itself as "a social network for real friends," letting users share messages and photos with the people they trust. To this end, Rally Up takes a very different approach to friends lists and friends management from other social applications. For instance, Rally Up doesn't integrate with Twitter. What?! I hear you gasp. As the saying goes, "It's not a flaw, it's a feature. " The point of Rally Up isn't to create or tap into yet another social network, it's to be able to be selective about who you share information with. For instance, when you add a user as a friend, you have different options that control how information is shared and received by them. Here are your options: Real friends - These are people that you want to know everything about.

Pay for Starbucks with Your iPhone at 1,000 Target Stores. Here's some good news for Target shoppers. The Starbucks Card Mobile iPhone application [iTunes link] can be now used to pay for Starbucks purchases via barcode scan at more than 1,000 Target locations across the United States. Starbucks has also updated the application with support for Starbucks Cards. Users can now register their cards, check their balances and reload empty cards using a credit card. The news is pretty significant for the coffee retailer and consumers alike.

While the Starbucks Card Mobile app looked promising (who doesn't love the idea of flashing their iPhone to pay for coffee?) , in the past it could only be used for mobile payments at 16 retail stores in Seattle and Silicon Valley. We can only hope that the payment trial will be extended to more retail stores in the coming months. Chatroulette Quadruples To 4 Million Visitors In February. Whether it is all the media attention or there are just a lot of lonely people out there with a deep need to talk to strangers, Chatroulette is on a roll. In February, 2010, the young site attracted 3.9 million visitors worldwide, up from 944,000 in January, 2010, according to the latest data from comScore (see chart above). Google Trends for Websites shows a similar growth curve, with about 500,000 unique daily visitors. The quadrupling of visitors measured by comScore coincided with the relatively new site being discovered by news sites and blogs.

It may just indicate the intense level of curiosity about the site, which matches random people together in a simple video chat environment. ComScore also estimates that the average visit on Chatroulette lasted 2.8 minutes, up from 2.4 minutes in January. The site already had its Daily Show moment and is inspiring some viral videos like the now-famous Chatroulette piano improv guy, Merton (see below). Twitter unveils 'promoted tweets' ad plan | Technology | guardia. The 140-character social networking site Twitter has found a business model: "promoted tweets" written by advertisers, which will appear when people search on the site.

The system echoes that used to huge success by Google, which serves adverts against search results. Twitter says it has already signed up a number of well-known organisations, including the coffee chain Starbucks, film-maker Sony Pictures, caffeine drink Red Bull, TV channel Bravo, the Virgin America airline and the US retailer Best Buy. Users will see sponsored tweets at the top of some Twitter search pages, which will be an ordinary tweet from the brand clearly labelled "Promoted" to distinguish paid-for tweets from normal ones.

Later on, adverts will also begin appearing on the site's home page when users visit it which will be tailored to the user's interests, determined by the messages they publish and receive. The company is clearly taking a more aggressive approach to spreading its brand to put it on more platforms. What Men And Women Are Doing On Facebook Page 3 of 3 - Forbes.co. EdgeRank: The Secret Sauce That Makes Facebook’s News Feed Tick. Yesterday at its f8 developer conference, Facebook engineers Ruchi Sanghvi and Ari Steinberg gave what may be the first thorough walkthrough of the underpinnings of Facebook News Feed, the all-important page that users see when they first log on to the site. After giving an overview of the history of News Feed, which has evolved quite a bit since it launched in 2006, they offered some insight into the algorithms that allow News Feed to show you relevant content, collectively called EdgeRank.

You may not realize it, but News Feed only displays a subset of the stories generated by your friends — if it displayed everything, there’s a good chance you’d be overwhelmed. Developers are always trying to make sure their sites and apps are publishing stories that make the cut, which has led to the concept of “News Feed Optimization”, and their success is dictated by EdgeRank. At a high level, the EdgeRank formula is fairly straightforward.
