Metempsychosis is the belief in the transmigration of souls, the speculation that the spirit of a living thing migrates after death into another living thing. All of these images consist of one object only, which has been manipulated--spun around, wiggled, or dropped multiple times during a single exposure, or over the course of several exposures. Steeped in film, literature, and theory, Cerith Wyn Evans produces highly conceptual installations, sculptures, photographs, and films through which he aims to evoke “polyphony, superimposition, layers, levels, the occluded, and the visibility of the mask.” What drives his practice is his fascination with perception—how we understand texts, language, our surroundings, and each other.
Wyn Evans combines and re-presents recognizable objects, texts, and images to catalyse a multiplicity of new, open-ended meanings. In his firework pieces, for example, texts from songs and poetry are created by placing fireworks on a wooden structure which is then set on fire while his chandelier sculptures turn texts into flashing Morse Code light signals. For Wyn Evans, these works interrogate the notion of the aesthetic and illustrate the malleability and instability of meaning as it shifts in context, perception, or physical states. Zeitpfeil (Time’s arrow) I (2014) Alicja Kwade’s mixed-media works manipulate mental perceptions and physical experiences of how the body inhabits space and time.
Kwade frequently uses imperfect doubling, mirror images, and repetition in her practice. For example, Dimension +1-+9 (2012) and Dimension -1--9 (2012) are a pair of clocks ticking just faster and slower than one second; Nissan (Parallelwelt 1 + 2) (2009) features two Nissan cars as mirror images, including topical scratches. Her common materials include items found in everyday life—like coins, metal pipes, mirrors, glass, lights, and bicycles—that she then distorts to create sensory illusions. The results, sometimes slouching or stretching, can appear anthropomorphic. A recent installation Durchbruch durch Schwäche (Breakthrough Through Weakness) (2011), comprised of over 300 clock weights, was based on the closing sequence of Christopher Nolan’s 2010 film Inception.
