3D printing. Porcelain casts from 3D-printed prototypes In honor of Ceramics Month here on Craft, I reached out to my friend Fonda Yoshimoto, an artist who enjoys working with clay.

3D printing

Here she talks about two different ways of creating ceramic art: one modern — 3D modeling and printing a prototype in order to make a mold; and one old — etching very thin porcelain to take advantage of the translucency once fired. Exploring Technology, Finding TraditionBy Fonda Yoshimoto I took a class called “Digital and Clay” when I was going to school at the Rhode Island School of Design. In the class we used 3D modeling software (Maya) and 3D printing to create prototypes.

We then used our prototypes to create molds to cast in porcelain. Plastic 3D-printed prototypes I was fascinated by the process, and even more excited about the translucency of the porcelain material when back-lit. “Touch, Scratch, Bind,” with lithophane tiles Related. What comes next?? Hi Guys,

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is an additive manufacturing technology commonly used for modeling, prototyping, and production applications. 3D printer gets a big resolution improvement. Venus 2.0. Hi Guys, You may remember the first object I printed last year (Venus), I have printed again this week... take a look on the difference...

These are the pics of Venus printed last year.... And this is the new Venus..... with 50 microns resolution.... cool!!!!!!!! Homemade high resolution DLP 3D printer. This link came in the mailbag from one Junior Veloso, of Singapore, who has produced this very impressive homemade photopolymer-based 3D printer.

Traditional stereolithography uses a scanning UV laser to cure the liquid resin, one layer at a time. A DLP printer is similar, but uses a micromirror-based video projector to expose each layer, as shown in the diagram. Junior’s version exposes each layer for four to eight seconds, resulting in print times on the order of several hours. The resin has to be opaque to prevent “shadowing” from light transmitted through the printing layer. [Thanks, Junior!] Related.

3D printers create edible objects - Technology & Science. An engineering lab and a culinary school have teamed up to construct novel edible objects with 3D printers that use pureed foods in place of ink.

Miniature space shuttles made of ground scallops and cheese are among the masterpieces that had already been made using 3D food printers designed by the computational synthesis laboratory at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. The lab is collaborating with the New York City-based French Culinary Institute to make new edible creations through a project called fab@home. I split my time between the virtual and real worlds of 3D. So I’m really excited about the collision of these two worlds happening in the realm of 3D printing and fabrication. But it’s not just me, there’s a rapidly growing number of makers turning their digital creations into tangible objects via 3D printing, CNC milling, laser cutting, and related technologies. Check out some of the more exciting gifts for the home fabricator. DIY fabrication hits a new price point (maybe...) Pretty much every geek who has ever drawn breath lusts after a “Star Trek”-style replicator.

DIY fabrication hits a new price point (maybe...)

The advent of 3D printing and CNC machines, such as the MakerBot, have started to make that dream a reality. They offer the DIY enthusiast the ability to create pretty much anything their minds can imagine (and render in a CAD program). But for all but the most devoted hardware hackers, the current price points — between $800 and $1,000 for 3D printers, around $600 for a CNC machine — are a little too high for comfort. Note: Technically, 3D printers are just a specialized type of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine, and in fact, many machines can be interchangeably converted between printing and milling. Giger aesthetic. The products I make are produced, not through the usual methods of mass manufacturing, but through rapid fabrication. Items are created in a computer with modeling software, and then converted from bits to atoms using 3D printing technologies. By using this method, an item can be replicated a thousand times, or only once. This means these things made of matter are not much different than any other piece of intellectual property such as music, movies, or software.
