American Apparel is a vertically integrated manufacturer, distributor and retailer, based in downtown Los Angeles, California. We currently employ approximately 10,000 people globally (about 5,000 in LA), and operate more than 285 retail stores in 20 countries. The company operates the largest garment factory in the United States, at a time when most apparel production has moved offshore.

Clothing manufacturing is a very tough job, but we've always tried to do things differently. In the early days we talked about "sweatshop free". Though now we talk less, we still continue to provide the same benefits (and more) to our workers. For us "sweatshop free" was never about criticizing other business models; it was about attempting something new. It comes down to this: not blindly outsourcing, but rather knowing the faces of our workers and providing them the opportunity to make a fair wage. The average sewer with experience at American Apparel is making about $25,000/yr, or $12 an hour, almost twice the federal minimum.
Equal Employment Opportunity Policy American Apparel has a policy of nondiscrimination in all aspects of its dealing with people. American Apparel actively maintains a goal of equal employment and respectful treatment of all individuals without regard to race, color, religion, creed, sex, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, citizenship, veteran or military status, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or other protected factors. American Apparel strives to ensure that all employees enjoy equal opportunities and an atmosphere free from unlawful discrimination.

Early-stage, high-growth firms have been shown to create the bulk of new jobs in the United States. But who creates all those companies that create all those jobs? Evidently, immigrants play an enormous role.
Legalize LA was an activist campaign promoting amnesty for undocumented immigrants , propagated through billboards, protests, clothing, advertisements, educational pamphlets, and grass roots support, underwritten by American Apparel . [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Originating locally in Downtown Los Angeles , the company took the campaign national in early 2008. [ 2 ] [ edit ] Campaign Legalize LA was billed as an education and media advertising campaign. [ 1 ] According to Dov Charney , Legalize LA was an open alternative to private lobbying . [ 2 ] Charney also stated that the cause is part of the core of the company. [ 3 ] Choosing to advertise social causes not directly related to the fashion company's product has drawn comparisons to campaigns done by advertisers like United Colors of Benetton and Nike . [ 2 ] American Apparel released a line of t-shirts featuring the words "Legalize LA" that were sold in its retail locations.
American Apparel believes that sexuality should be celebrated, not condemned. When California voters passed Prop 8 in 2008, we let our community know we would support whatever stand they wanted to take. American Apparel believes in freedom, expression and equality, things that are inherently condemned in the prohibition of gay marriage. After printing a few hundred Legalize Gay t-shirts for a rally near our factory in downtown Los Angeles, the company received thousands of requests from people all over the world who asked for us to expand it. With many of our employees and customers identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered, we are a company that is vocal about our support for the protection of gay rights.
Best Fitting Pants One day I walked into one of your NYC stores to check out the merchandise. I honestly had my doubts about the name "American Apparel" ... is there really quality in anything American made these days? I figured I just had to check it out and possibly get a chuckle out of it. I couldn't believe it - I found the BEST fitting pair of pants I have been able to find in about 25 years!!! Your slim fit is a true slim fit; the fit and material quality are excellent. It's like these were tailor made for me.
