Animal testing. Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, animal research, and in vivo testing, is the use of non-human animals in experiments (although some research about animals involves only natural behaviors or pure observation, such as a mouse running a maze or field studies of chimp troops). The research is conducted inside universities, medical schools, pharmaceutical companies, farms, defense establishments, and commercial facilities that provide animal-testing services to industry.[1] It includes pure research (such as genetics, developmental biology, and behavioral studies) as well as applied research (such as biomedical research, xenotransplantation, drug testing, and toxicology tests, including cosmetics testing).
Animals are also used for education, breeding, and defense research. The practice is regulated to various degrees in different countries. Graph 1 – Click to Enlarge In 2012 US government statistics put the number of laboratory animals used in research at 953,077, a 16% drop from 2010. The above graph shows the breakdown of different species used. It is important to note that these statistics do not include rats, mice, birds and fish, as these animals are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act – though they are still protected under other regulations. Table 1 – Click to Enlarge Precise figures for the number of mice, rats, fish and birds used in research do not exist and thus it is not possible to accurately estimate the total number of vertebrates used in research.
Across the EU, 93% of research is conducted on animals which are not counted under the US Animal Welfare Act. If the same was true in the US then the total number of animals used in research would be 13.6 million, however this is only an estimate and we have previously suggested the total figure could be as high as 25 million.
