Nature Trail to the Chapel A one-third-mile paved nature trail east of the facility allows visitors to walk to the Cadet Chapel — an iconic part of the Academy campus. Academic Preparation. If you wish to attend the United States Air Force Academy, your academic achievements through your high school years are of paramount importance.

Academic Preparation

Per our selection criteria, academic admissions factors are weighted at 60% of total admission considerations. Achieving excellent grades in a wide range of courses and high standardized test scores are critical to a successful application. Prep School Program. The United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School, popularly known as the “Prep School,” prepares a diverse group of cadet candidates to succeed and lead at the United States Air Force Academy.

Prep School Program

Unless you are a Regular Airman in the Air Force, there is no direct application process for the Prep School. If you apply to the Academy and are not accepted, you may receive an appointment to the Prep School. For more details, see Prep School Admissions. Students at the Prep School are addressed as “cadet candidates.” Each year, approximately 240 students between 17 and 22 years old begin the program in late July.

High School + College Students. The majority of the United States Air Force Academy applicant pool are students attending either public or private high schools in the United States, and some are already in college.

Be sure that you are familiar with our admissions factors and application steps before you begin your application. Remember that in addition to academic excellence, participation in athletics as well as leadership roles in athletic and non-athletic extracurricular activities are critical. Sustained participation in select activities over the course of your high school career is preferred. Scholarships. The Falcon Foundation acquires funds necessary to implement the scholarship program from a scholarship endowment.

Scholarships

The number of scholarships awarded annually is set by the USAFA Admissions Office and is 100 or less. Contributions and donations to the Foundation are tax deductible to the donor and tax exempt to the Foundation. Each scholarship is dedicated in honor of a pioneer in aviation or an individual who is distinguished in aviation or defense. Falcon Scholarships. Every year, some applicants to the United States Air Force Academy show great potential, but fail to gain admission to the Academy because they need additional academic preparation.

From this applicant pool, Academy admissions recommends worthy students for consideration by the Falcon Foundation. There is no application process for this scholarship. Grading. At the United States Air Force Academy, you will be held to strict standards, academically, physically and morally.

When it comes to the acquisition of knowledge, the honing of the body, and the attainment of military proficiency, we take our jobs very seriously. And we expect the same from our cadets. Most courses at the Academy are graded on a grade point scale, with an “A” worth four grade points per semester hour and an “F” worth zero. You’ll receive a pass/fail grade in several courses, particularly military training and airmanship. Application Steps. To gain admission to the United States Air Force Academy, you must strive to supply your best possible performance regarding each admissions requirement and at each application step. Your performance on all admissions factors combine to create your overall competitive standing amongst prospective students, or cadets, and may lead to an offer of appointment to the Academy. A Selection Panel, composed of a cross section of senior Academy staff, reviews each completed admissions file according to our admissions guidelines.

Extracurricular Activities. Participation in a variety of athletic and non-athletic high school activities is an asset in preparing for the demanding Air Force Academy program, and is a competitive factor in your application to the Academy. Sustained participation and leadership in a few activities is desirable. For more on extracurricular activities appropriate to a competitive application, see Advice to Applicants: All Applicants. Low participation in sanctioned or high school athletic and non-athletic extracurricular activities may result in a noncompetitive application. However, consideration will be given to candidates from schools that do not offer typical athletic and extracurricular activities, as well as to candidates who work after school.

Academic Performance. The Air Force Academy seeks individuals who possess exceptional academic prowess and leadership potential. Because we offer one of the most prestigious and respected academic programs available, academic admissions standards are high. The Admissions process includes a review of two major academic performance indicators: Our students, or cadets, must maintain a strict schedule of study, athletic responsibilities, leadership and military duties.

Admissions Cycle. Fitness Assessment. Physical fitness is key to success at the United States Air Force Academy, especially during Basic Cadet Training (BCT) and the fourth-class (freshman) year. Therefore, satisfactory completion of the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) is an important admissions requirement. This test of strength, agility, speed and endurance is designed to predict your aptitude for demands of Academy life. It will help determine whether you possess the stamina and movement skills required to successfully complete the physical program at the Academy. It is an important factor in the overall assessment of your admission file. CFA Events. Medical Evaluation. All candidates admitted to the United States Air Force Academy must meet the medical and weight standards for a commission in the United States Air Force. If you do not meet these standards as an applicant, you will be disqualified unless provided a medical waiver. Medical standards must also be maintained throughout your time at the Academy.

If you are appointed to the Academy and do not maintain the standards as a cadet, you may be disenrolled. Take care to make all scheduled examination dates to ensure your application will be completed by required deadlines. You should know that it can take up to 30 days to schedule your initial medical evaluation, 60 days for completion and possibly another 30 days for a medical waiver if required. Basic Cadet Training. The Block Plan. Adopted in 1970, Colorado College’s “Block Plan” is a uniquely intensive academic schedule that allows students to plunge into a different subject every three and a half weeks rather than balancing several throughout a semester. Students take one course at a time and professors teach one, with each block covering the same amount of material as a semester system. The result? You can study the film industry on location in Hollywood, find Jupiter during evening labs in Barnes observatory, or traverse the natural wonders of the Southwest as a field archaeologist.
