Photo: Donata Wenders In an early sequence of Wim Wenders’s new 3-D documentary, Pina, on the late German choreographer Pina Bausch, a woman in a long black dress walks trancelike, along an empty sidewalk, as a man cautiously observes.
They face each other for an intense frozen moment before she drops towards him, knees straight, body taut and determined. He catches her, her face only inches from the concrete, and after propping her upright, the two circle each other briefly before she swoons again in the same planked trust drop. The exchange is exhilarating to watch, but who this pair is or why they’re facing off is unclear. As suddenly as they appear, the man and woman are replaced by another burst of narrative dance.
