Get your FREE Films Burns and Light Leaks here! Some of you have seen the so called “film burn” (or sometimes called light leaks) on different creative pieces. The look typically comes from the misfeed of film through the camera gate behind the lens of a film camera, creating a beautiful but unintended look of red and yellowish or any variety of hues on the negative and the print. You can pay as much as $199 for a single standard definition clip from Artbeats or $499 for the complete collection. See it here . But here at digital cinema foundry you get a few of them today for FREE! http://www.digitalcinemafoundry.com/2010/02/19/free-film-burns-exclusively-here/

http://nofilmschool.com/ Editing got you down? Highlight Hunter is looking to make editing certain projects almost 100% faster. You may not be using Highlight Hunter on your next feature film, but there are fantastic ideas at work with this brand new app. If you’ve ever been filming with a GoPro or FlipCam, you know that there is plenty of unusable or bad footage, and this application aims to give you a way to identify the good shots immediately.

Sony has released the official launch video of the Sony NEX-FS700, featuring loads of the amazing super-slow motion footage we all have been waiting for. Unless you have been living under a rock for the last week, you might have heard that it shoots up to 240fps in 1080p (in 8 second bursts maximum). It’s only a about two weeks until the first Filmmaking Masterclass in 2012 is going to take place in Las Vegas, and only a few days later in beautiful Key West, Florida. In June, we will host the 3rd Masterclass of 2012 in Majorca, Spain. We have put up the dedicated website for the Masterclasses as the requests for information have been truly overwhelming. (If you have any questions also feel free to email info@filmmaking-masterclass.com )

My agent got in touch recently about an article that I might or might not have written on here about how to deal with burnout. I’ve sort of touched on this on a number of occasions because I’ve definitely suffered from it myself and it’s not very pleasant. Wikipedia defines it as ‘a psychological term for the experience of long-term exhaustion and diminished interest.’ In my own case I hit the wall when running my own production company, piling everything I had into the wrong kind of work and psychologically building a bunch of problems that I’ve now put firmly behind me. http://www.elskid.com/blog/

While the world is waiting for GoPro to release it’s Flat Lens Dive Housing, there have been other companies already selling some solutions. While those solutions aren’t warrantied by GoPro and will cost you an extra dime, this clever little solution from Jomol will save you a few bucks as a workaround. For this you’ll need the extended LCD back housing that gives you a bit of room to turn the GoPro Hero camera backwards inside the housing. Beats trying to make one yourself and risk water leakage. What I like about this idea is that you can probably cut a few colored gels to help you get some better white balance underwater. If you’re not up to speed about the issues of Underwater video with the GoPro, check out this article here: http://cheesycam.com/gopro-underwater-blurfix-flat-lens-kit/

LIGHTING//DARKNESS

Just a bit of context on the scoring side of things: I was asked to work on another project and had very specific guidelines in terms of audio cues over specific sections of time. I was so eager to work on the project that I decided to work on this score even before there was sign off on the pitch. I finished the score in a day or two and send it to the boys Khalid and Jonathan at Next Level Pictures who I was going to work with on the spot. They loved the track but was informed that the pitch did not go through - I was bummed but immediately knew that the track could work for the [Fo'tis'ma] project that I had coming up. People often ask how do I start a project. http://www.salomonligthelm.blogspot.com/

One of the most questions I get asked by HDSLR filmmakers is: Should I buy Canon EF lenses or Zeiss ZE lenses for HDSLR video? I recently tested two wide angle Zeiss ZE SLR lenses – one that is currently available (25mm 1:2), and another that won’t be available until May of this year (15mm 1:2.8) and thought that this would be a good time to partially help answer this question. http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/

I get the sense that Adobe is thinking a lot about tablets and Photography. They’ve released Photoshop Touch for iPad, as well as Carousel Revel , which is like a cloud-based Lightroom-light that syncs across mobile and desktop platforms. Third-party Lightroom users have also tried to bolster their own photo management experience by creating companion mobile apps.
The idea of interviewing Paula Pogranizky made me feel a little bit nervous. Doing any interview, especially with someone whose work you respect, is always daunting. I’ve never met a single writer who doesn’t have the same masochistic complex. I relaxed as soon as I was greeted by Paula, a fair-skinned petite blonde girl who welcomed me with a big smile on her face.

I’ve received the following info from Canon inc. Japan: The movie color conversion matrix (RGB -> YUB) for the EOS-1D X and 5D mark III has been changed to BT.709 (sometimes referred to as REC.709) for Full HD and HD movies (On previous EOS products it was BT.601). SD movies remain as BT.601.
