Dual layer DVDs are like 8.9GB although most mainstream movies won't take up the full amount. DVD extras often don't add up to that much, so you might as a bit of drive space by excluding the extras, but probably not much. It depends on the movie. In terms of quality, the extracted DVD is the same quality as original source unless you start compressing (but MacTheRipper doesn't do that). DVD extraction is a CPU-heavy activity, so the time it takes to extract a movie is tied to the length of the movie and the speed of your computer and the extraction application, of course.
If you Google "how to extract a DVD" or "how to rip a DVD", you will find plenty of tutorials. I am satisfied with the freeware tools available for my Mac, but your mileage may vary. Episode Butler - Home. Episode Butler is a tool to automatically fetch new episodes of your favorite shows from usenet.
It remembers which episodes you already downloaded and monitors usenet index sites to see if a new one is available. It also knows when new episodes are aired tries to download these when they are available. New episodes are passed to your favorite newsgrabbing tool so it can be downloaded from the newsgroup its posted in without any user interaction.
