Delia Online is 10 years old! - from Delia Online. Quick and Easy Wholemeal Loaf - English. The poet Pam Ayres once said, when describing her home-made wholemeal bread, that it was like 'biting into a cornfield', and that's it – the very best description I've ever come across. A crisp, crunchy crust and then all the flavour of the wholewheat grain – take a bite, close your eyes and you'll know just what she meant.

Then, when you've grasped how easy wholemeal bread is to make, you'll probably never stop making it. The recipe here is adapted from Doris Grant's famous loaf in her book Your Daily Bread, for which I continue to give thanks. Makes 1 large or 2 small loaves This recipe is taken from How to Cook Book One. Begin by warming the flour slightly in the oven for about 10 minutes, then turn the oven off for now.

Now transfer the dough to a flat surface and stretch it out into an oblong, then fold one edge into the centre and the other over that. Meanwhile, pre-heat the oven to gas mark 6, 400°F (200°C). Pitta Bread - Middle Eastern. Return to listing Home-made pitta bread is such a treat, and with a breadmaker to make the initial dough, it's not a lot of bother. I love the way they puff up and become hollow. Makes 12 To make the dough, tip all the ingredients, along with 11 fl oz (310 ml) water, into the breadmaker in the order stated in your manual.

Then set the machine to the dough-only setting (as the pittas are going to be baked in the oven). Now simply press start and let the machine do all the work. When you are ready to bake the pittas, pre-heat the oven to gas mark 7, 425°F (220°C). Meanwhile, prepare the next three portions and when the first ones are ready, remove them from the oven and wrap them in another tea cloth. _This recipe is taken from How to Cook Book Three Return to HomepageVisit the Delia Online Cookery School with WaitroseClick here to go to Waitrose.com Copyright © 2009 Delia Smith/New Crane Internet Limited, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Return to listing I have a passion for Irish bread and always bring some back when I visit Dublin. The true Irish way of making this is with soured unpasteurised milk or buttermilk. The latter is available but not can't always be found in a hurry, so here I have used soured cream thinned down with water, which works perfectly.

If you can't get soured cream use 10 fl oz (275 ml) milk and 2 teaspoons cream of tartar in addition to the soda. Soda bread is best eaten as fresh as possible: it's not a keeping loaf at all though I'm sure there won't actually be any left to keep! Makes 1 loaf This recipe is taken from Delia Smith’s Complete Illustrated Cookery Course. Begin by mixing the flour, salt and bicarbonate of soda thoroughly in a bowl. Knead the dough lightly (into a round ball) so as to get the surface smooth, then put it on to the prepared baking sheet.
