Ruth works in a wide range of lettering styles, from chick lit to historical, and loves the variety the commissions provide.

Cakes to Dream On: A Master Class in Decorating (9780471214625):

`Cakes to Dream On', subtitled `A Master Class in Decorating' by major American pastry artist and teacher, Colette Peters has the ambition to be an advanced class in multi-tiered cake decorating. This ambition is not to be taken lightly, as there is very little in this book for the amateur home / bake sale cook. This is not to say that the book is not chocked full of great ideas, if you already know a lot about how to work with royal icing, fondant, marzipan, and multi-layered cakes. http://www.amazon.com/Cakes-Dream-On-Master-Decorating/dp/0471214620
http://www.amazon.com/Kates-Cake-Decorating-Techniques-Fancy/dp/1592530702 This is the book that has split the community of cake decorators right down the middle, from stem to stern. Half of us think that Sullivan's craft, while passionate and inspiring, shows signs of sloppy, careless finish, while the other half holds her up as the exemplar of a new kind of fun styling that hasn't been seen in decades. I decided to make up my mind by ordering two copies of her book, one to give to my mother, one to keep for myself. We challenged each other to find the best and worst recipes and tips in Sullivan's opus.

What could be better food for your children than cupcakes? Don't think that cupcakes are one of the major food groups? Then tell them if they want cupcakes they will have to bake them themselves! My oldest grand daughter is starting to help her mother in the kitchen, so I decided to accelerate her learning experience by gifting her with this delightful book.

Cakes to Inspire and Desire (9780715324974): Lindy Smith: Books

http://www.amazon.com/Cakes-Inspire-Desire-Lindy-Smith/dp/0715324977 I purchased this book with very high hopes, because Lindy's cakes are so spectacular. However, I was a little disappointed. Her specialty is the wonky cakes like the one on the cover, but I found her instructions were pretty sparse. I have learned more about how to put together wonky cakes from free online tutorials than from the info in this book. I also think the photography was insufficient. All of the photos of the wonky cake construction are shown from the top, looking down on the top of the cake.
http://www.amazon.com/Cookie-Craft-Techniques-Creative-Occasions/dp/1580176941 What a gem of a cookie decorating book! Many books have been written on this subject; some OK and others are great---add this to the "great" list! Bakers and writers Valerie Peterson and Janice Fryer have turned out quite the encyclopedia of cookie design and here's why..... Visually, the photography is sharp, clear, and very detailed; this is necessary in any instructional book that needs to show you how it's product is to turn out. And instead of one page and one cookie, the cookies are grouped into a category and photographed all together on that page.

No new elite world-class universities have been founded for at least 100 years (Stanford-1891; Rice-1912), and most of them are centuries older than that. Ben Nelson, former CEO of Snapfish, has just announced that he’s starting a new one, for-profit and online. The Minerva Project has scored $25 million, the biggest seed bet in Benchmark Capital’s history, for a projected 2014 launch. Nelson, improbably, has been a university-reform geek since his undergraduate days at Wharton, where he organized multidisciplinary courses and field trips.
