Most of the 1970s saw the redevelopment of what was once the largest strawberry patch in the United States from the "Flying Cow Ranch" owned by Boston financial tycoon C. Oliver Wellington into the infrastructure of a community now home to tens of thousands - from the huge Lake Wellington to the ultra-exclusive Palm Beach Polo Country Club.
In the 1980s, Wellington began to gain its reputation as the winter home of North America's equestrian elite. To this day, the sprawling southern half of the community, which sits on the cusp of the Everglades, remains an Equestrian Preserve Area, the first and only of its kind in Florida, established with the aim of keeping the equestrian community in Wellington for generations to come.
