The California Open Source Textbook Project (COSTP) began in 2001 as a collaborative – a public/private undertaking; it was the first organization created to address the high cost, content range, and consistent shortages of K-12 textbooks in California. The latter goal is currently well on its way to being accomplished . COSTP has evolved over recent years to establish and spread the Open Textbook , Open Educational Resource (OER), Open Courseware , and Open Education memes to K-12 and postsecondary educational institutions, worldwide.

http://www.khanacademy.org/ Matrices, vectors, vector spaces, transformations. Covers all topics in a first year college linear algebra course. This is an advanced course normally taken by science or engineering majors after taking at least two semesters of calculus (although calculus really isn't a prereq) so don't confuse this with regular high school algebra.

A new study, from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) Early Grade Retention and Student Success: Evidence from Los Angeles , has some public officials wondering if it is time to revisit the practice of retention. It shouldn’t. Retention is the name given to the practice of repeating an entire grade level. According to the study, having students repeat a year in the early grades helped numerous failing students reach proficiency in math and English. http://www.openeducation.net/

It encompasses several different types of resources, including learning content (courses, lesson plans and learning objects ), tools (software that supports the development, management and re-use of content) and implementation resources (the intellectual property licences that promote open licensing and other principles of best practice)." One of the confusing things to entrepreneurs, investors and educators is the relationship between customer development and business model design and business planning and execution. I was in Washington D.C. last week presenting at the ARPA-E conference. I spent the next day working with the National Science Foundation on the Innovation Corps , and talking to congressional staffs about how entrepreneurial educational programs can reshape our economy.
