Gassmann, whose late father, Vittorio, was a critically acclaimed star of Italian cinema in its heyday in the 1960s, tweeted over the weekend with the hashtag #Romasonoio (I am Rome), calling on the city’s residents to be an example of civility and clean up their own little corners of Rome with pride.

Posted on 04. Mar, 2015 by Serena in Art, Travel Last week I recounted an anecdote about my visit to the Vatican Museums and how I ended up running away from the Sistine Chapel. However, as I said at the end of it, “l’anno dopo ebbi la mia rivincita con Michelangelo!” (the following year I got my payback on Michelangelo!) Here’s how: The summer following my agoraphobic experience at the Sistine Chapel, freshly graduated in Egyptology, I was offered a part time job as a cataloguer at the Archaeological Museum in Florence.

One afternoon I decided to go and visit le Cappelle Medicee, famous for the monumental tombs of Lorenzo il Magnifico and Giuliano dei Medici designed by Michelangelo. Dente is a young Italian singer-songwriter from the area of Fidenza; his real name is Giuseppe Peveri, but the nickname Dente (which is the Italian for “tooth”) was given to him by his uncle when he was 13… and he decided it was perfect for his musical alter-ego.

Dente is one of the most interesting artists of the Italian new wave of singer-songwriters, mixing the great tradition of names such as Lucio Battisti, Ivan Graziani, Rino Gaetano and Francesco De Gregori with a more modern and contemporary sensibility. His lyrics are filled with word plays, puns and other tricks making them fascinating and intriguing – with albums titled “Non c’è due senza te” (“There’s no two without you”), “L’amore non è bello” (“Love is not beautiful”), “Io tra di noi” (“Me between us”), “Almanacco del giorno prima” (“Almanac of the day before”)… The result is enticing: an amazing trip into the mind of an original artist. Traces of red painted numbers have been found on the arches of Rome’s Colosseum during the ongoing $33 million restoration work aimed at repairing damage suffered by the 2,000-year-old monument since the Middle Ages. Similar to today’s stadium seating systems, the numbers — written according to the system used in ancient Rome, using letters of the Latin alphabet such as X, L, V, I — stood on the entrance gate arches, allowing an easier access to the seats.

Rome’s Colosseum a Condominium in Medieval Times First carved in the travertine stones, the numbers were then painted in red, so that people could easily see them from a distance. There were 76 public numbered entrances, plus four special un-numbered gates. Two were reserved to the emperor, senators, magistrates, wealthy patricians, and the Vestal Virgins, priestesses responsible for maintaining the sacred fire within the Temple of Vesta. “The 50,000 spectators had a ticket that said which numbered gate arch they were supposed to enter.
