District 39 Curriculum

Our curriculum includes concepts, skills, contexts, applications, and assessments and is designed around learning standards. The Illinois State Board of Education designates the learning standards for all schools in the state. Districts then develop their curricula using these standards as guidance as they consider other best current practice research in the content area under consideration. Our goal is to create the most appropriate curricula to meet the needs of students in District 39. The Common Core State Standards have been adopted by over 40 states and the District of Columbia and were collaboratively developed by many state and educational organizations. Formative assessment is crucial for responsive teaching and reflective learning. This segment of "Nudging" explores how to embrace this mandate in a way that has real, valuable impact on student growth. Formative assessment is a way of evaluating student work while it is still in progress. Rather than waiting until a project or unit's conclusion to test for understanding (known as summative assessment, which will be covered in the April 2011 issue), formative assessment creates an as-you-go feedback loop.

This has two goals: first, it lets the instructor rethink, tailor, or reteach concepts that have not been understood, and secondly, it gives students the ability to shore up their understanding at various points in their research. Library classes began the first week of school and children have been coming to the library for a lesson and to borrow books once a week. Classes have been reviewing the library rules for being respectful, responsible, safe, and ready to learn. Children in Pre-K classes have been learning how to come in to the library and have been enjoying listening to Clifford books.

Kindergarten classes have been enjoying Peter Brown books such as “My Teacher is a Monster”. They will begin to learn parts of a story and the jobs of authors, illustrators, and publishers.
