Dennis Ritchie: The Shoulders Steve Jobs Stood On | Wired Enterprise. Dennis Ritchie (standing) and Ken Thompson at a PDP-11 in 1972. (Photo: Courtesy of Bell Labs) The tributes to Dennis Ritchie won’t match the river of praise that spilled out over the web after the death of Steve Jobs. But they should. And then some. “When Steve Jobs died last week, there was a huge outcry, and that was very moving and justified. But Dennis had a bigger effect, and the public doesn’t even know who he is,” says Rob Pike, the programming legend and current Googler who spent 20 years working across the hall from Ritchie at the famed Bell Labs. On Wednesday evening, with a post to Google+, Pike announced that Ritchie had died at his home in New Jersey over the weekend after a long illness, and though the response from hardcore techies was immense, the collective eulogy from the web at large doesn’t quite do justice to Ritchie’s sweeping influence on the modern world.

“Pretty much everything on the web uses those two things: C and UNIX,” Pike tells Wired. From B to C.

Eternal Flame. No-stress remote access | Utilities. When you’re at the office or on the road, it can be handy to have remote access to your home Mac—so you can retrieve a forgotten file, start a large download, or perform some other task. The same applies if you’re at home and need access to your work computer. OS X provides a number of ways to connect to a remote machine, including remote login, personal file sharing, and FTP. But while those are all good tools, they don’t let you use that remote Mac’s graphical user interface. Fortunately, you can do that, too, using the Apple Remote Desktop server built into every copy of OS X since version 10.4. We’ve covered the basics of using Remote Desktop before (see No Files Left Behind ); this month, we’ll show you how to set up a fully secure remote connection, in which all the exchanges between the machines will be encrypted. Anyone who might be “listening in” (if you’re at a coffee shop, for instance) won’t be able to capture anything other than a stream of useless encrypted characters. ssh.

And for some people, many of those flaws are little changes that, collectively, affect the overall experience of using OS X. For example, the fact that the user-level Library folder is now hidden, or that opening new windows has gained some additional—and, some feel, unnecessary—animation. The good news is that many of these little changes can be tweaked. However, while some options are available in System Preferences, many are hidden settings that require knowledge of Terminal commands or the use of a third-party utility.

We’ve covered a number of Lion-tweaking commands on the Mac OS X Hints blog, but Lion Tweaks, a simple utility by 16-year-old Fredrik Wiker, gathers most of these Lion-specific modifications in a single window that lets you make changes by clicking a few buttons. Launch Lion Tweaks, and you get a window listing the 18 settings you can use the utility to change.
