'Dream builders' in Top of Utah given kudos. OGDEN -- Catholic Community Services honored several local philanthropists at their annual Dream Builder's Breakfast on Thursday, but 9-year-old Armani McFarland clearly stole the show.

McFarland, a fourth-grader at Majestic Elementary School in Harrisville, was honored as CCS's Young Philanthropist of the Year for her volunteer work in the community. During the past year, McFarland organized a successful food drive for the Joyce Hansen-Hall Food Bank and followed that up with two separate drives for backpacks and coats. She collected nearly 500 coats and backpacks along with countless supplies for low-income students in the Top of Utah area. McFarland said she was honored and excited to be recognized for her efforts. "God wants us to help those who can't help themselves," McFarland said. McFarland solicited the help of her family, friends and other groups and corporations such as Mountain America Credit Union, United Stationers and the Alpine Church to lend a helping hand with the drives.

$36K grant foots ‘Gotta Have Sole’ campaign - Cranston Herald. Cranston resident Nicholas Lowinger has just been announced as the recipient of the 2013 Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award, a $36,000 award that recognizes teens for their commitment to social action and volunteer service. Now 15 years old, Lowinger began his own non-profit foundation, the Gotta Have Sole Foundation, which provides brand new footwear to children living in homeless shelters, when he was just 12 years old, having been inspired by a visit to such a shelter with his mother, Lori, when he was 5.

“My mother is an art therapist and she did a lot of work in shelters doing art therapy with kids. She wanted me to see how other children were living, to make me appreciative of what I had,” said Lowinger, who is about to enter his sophomore year of high school at the Wheeler School this coming fall. Lori described how Nicholas’ reaction to that very first shelter visit when he was 5 led to the creation of the now-thriving non-profit foundation. Lily's Heroes. Matthew Kaplan is a junior in high school with a passion for social activism. The summer of his eighth grade year, he founded The Be "Open to New Experiences" (Be ONE) Project, which is a bullying prevention program for middle-school students. The Be ONE Project is an interactive day of games, activities and guided discussions designed to build community and foster empathy and mutual respect. Over the course of the day, as the activities transition from non-competitive group games, to small team challenges, to guided discussion in Be ONE circles, The Be ONE Project breaks down barriers, opens communication, and instills trust and community.

By cultivating a culture of mutual respect, Be ONE empowers students to create for themselves a supportive learning environment free of physical, verbal, and cyber bullying. In just three years, more than 750 students and 150 teachers and upperclassmen volunteers have participated in The Be ONE Project. GirlsHelpingGirls.
