A conversation with Michael W. Fox | Dissecting Behavior. A love for animals Michael W. Fox, who is not only a veterinarian with a PhD degree in medicine but also holds a Doctor of Science degree in ethology/animal behavior from the University of London, England, shows how science can enhance our empathy and ability to better care for and communicate with animals, and speak for the rights and interests of all creatures great and small. An Honor Roll Member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and a founding member of the International Association for Applied Animal Ethology, Dr. Fox has helped make animal behavior and animal welfare science part of the veterinary teaching curriculum, and more generally awakening public sensibility through his internationally syndicated newspaper column Animal Doctor both in the U.S and in many other countries.
Michael and I chatted for about 40 minutes, and it was such a moving conversation that I thought I would provide his voice to accompany his words in hopes they inspire you as they have me. Hansa Dogs and Cats. Take care of your dog’s ears. By Nancy Cope Ear infections can be bacterial or yeast. A dog with healthy ears will resist having infections but if his ears become compromised in some way, an infection can develop and he will start to show symptoms of the infection. Many dogs are prone to ear infections. It’s important to keep your dog’s ears clean and healthy.
Things that can lead to canine ear infection include trauma to the ear, allergies, parasites, changes in the dog’s hormones or thyroid levels, a foreign body that’s stuck in the ear, and moisture in the ear. If your dog has an ear infection, there are some symptoms that will tip you off: • Bad odor • Changes in behavior such as irritability or depression • Discharge • Pain around the ears • Redness or swelling of the ear flap and/or canal • Scratching or rubbing of the ears and head • Shaking of the head or tilting it to one side Dogs with long ears are particularly prone to infections, especially dogs with long hair such as the cockerspaniel.
The Wrong Automation. Take It All Off! Five things you can do to protect your dog. By Nancy Kerns I was pretty traumatized recently by a phenomenon I had heard about many times but had never before seen: the intense, chaotic, life-or-death struggle that ensues when one dog gets his jaw stuck in another dog’s collar. It happened to some dogs that live a few houses down from my home office. I was working at my computer when I heard a dog screaming. I leaped up from my desk and ran down the sidewalk toward the screaming. It was two young Lab-mixes in the front yard of a house down the street. His buddy was not screaming; he was fighting for his life, and being choked to death by his own collar. I grabbed one dog by the scruff; she grabbed the other. Then I saw the other buckle; it was in the mouth of the dog whose jaw was trapped.
Just then, the owner of the other dog ran out of the house with a pair of scissors. Imagine what would have happened if that young woman hadn’t had the scissors handy. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The Yerkes-Dodson Law In 1908, Yerkes and Dodson published findings of a remarkable phenomenon they discovered regarding the relationship between arousal and performance. The law asserts: The speed of learning and performance increases with arousal; however, it quickly reaches an optimal intensity where learning and performance then deteriorate. Both weak stimuli and strong stimuli result in slow habit-formation.The more difficult the task, the lower the optimal level of arousal for maximum performance. “A stimulus whose strength is nearer to the [minimum] threshold than to the point of harmful stimulation is most favorable to the acquisition of a habit.”

Modern Canine Training Blog For The Dog. The effects of dog obedience training and behavioural counselling upon the human-canine relationship. We assessed the effects of obedience training and canine behaviour counselling upon the human-canine relationship. Thirty adult participants provided perceptions of their dog's behaviour and were then randomly assigned to one of three groups: the Obedience group, which received obedience training and canine behaviour counselling; the Time Instructed group, which was asked to spend 20 min a day interacting with their dog; the No Instruction group, which did not receive any instructions.
After assignment, the Obedience group completed an 8-week obedience and canine behaviour counselling class where all the participants again provided information about their dog's behaviour. In addition, all participants were also asked to keep daily logs of the time spent with their dogs in training, play, exercise and other activities. A video-camera was used to obtain pretest and posttest measures of obedience behaviour, proximity, tactile behaviour and separation anxiety exhibited by each dog. The most current, accurate, and objective wolf news can be found on the website of the International Wolf Center (www.wolf.org) Schenkel's 1948 expression studies of wolves available Outmoded notion of the alpha wolf The concept of the alpha wolf is well ingrained in the popular wolf literature at least partly because of my book "The Wolf: Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species," written in 1968, published in 1970, republished in paperback in 1981, and currently still in print, despite my numerous pleas to the publisher to stop publishing it.
Although most of the book's info is still accurate, much is outdated. We have learned more about wolves in the last 40 years then in all of previous history. Book Review: Things Your Dog Doesn’t Want You to Know | notes from a dog walker. Generally speaking dog humor books never make me laugh. There’s usually a lot of jokes about dogs eating trash and looking guilty and contrary to what the titles may imply, they actually slay my soul.
I try to avoid them. So, when I got asked to review a copy of the book Things Your Dog Doesn’t Want You to Know, I wanted to say no, but wound up saying yes for two reasons: there is a quote from Steve Martin on the front and I read an excerpt entitled, “I Can Poop The Second I Start My Walk.” Steve Martin is one the funniest people of all time. Even if he never actually read this book, just the idea that he may have looked at the cover or tripped over the book, is enough for me. And once I read that “I Can Poop” line, I knew the writers must know something about dogs. Things Your Dog Doesn’t Want You to Know is a collection of stories from eleven fictional dogs who reveal what’s really going on in the minds of dogs. Cheers to humor being one of the best teachers. A counterbalanced version of Ainsworth's Strange Situation Procedure reveals secure-base effects in dog–human relationships.
Accepted 4 April 2007. It has been proposed that the dog–human relationship constitutes an infantile-like attachment. However, previous empirical support based on Ainsworth's Strange Situation test has proved inconclusive due to order effects inherent in the original procedure. In particular, these order effects compromise the ability to establish an essential facet of attachment: whether or not owners function as a secure base for their pet dogs. Order effects were counteracted in the present study by including a second condition in which the order of owner and stranger presence was counterbalanced. Keywords: Dog–human bond , Attachment , Ainsworth's Strange Situation , Separation anxiety. (96) Nat Geo Wild France. During a recent Facebook discussion, it was pointed out that I had never worn a prong collar. As such, I would have no idea whether a prong (a.k.a. pinch collar) causes pain. My knuckles firmly rapped, it seemed the only solution would be for me to open my mind and wear a prong collar. For those unfamiliar with the product, these come in a variety of styles. Some look scary with spikes and “prongs” of metal. I do know how to fit a prong collar, and I know how to use one. While not scientific, I wanted to challenge my pre-conceived notions. I began by placing the collar on my forearm.
Carefully, I adjusted the number of links so the collar sat high up on my neck, snug but not tight. My husband entered the room, rolled his eyes at yet another “experiment”. That is when the prong collar “bit” me. One of my friends pointed out that dogs have muscular necks and walk on all fours. It was here that the collar “bit” me for the second time. I went into this process with an open mind. Like this: Home-made dog wheelchair. Trainer Q&A: Good manners for dogs and owners in off-leash parks | Tails of Seattle. It's a dash through the gate, the last hurdle before getting to the off-leash beach at Magnuson Park for Boone Elliott and his pack earlier this year.
Photo by Alan Berner / The Seattle Times Tacoma trainer and author Kathy Sdao talks about dog-park etiquette in the second of a three-park series. An upfront admission: I stopped taking my own dogs to public off-leash parks several years ago, after a particularly traumatic incident at a local dog park. I witnessed bullying so extreme and unprovoked it shocked me. I expected bloodshed -- mine. The nasty behavior came from a woman who stormed my way because I'd handed my dog a kibble after he'd raced to me when I called him. She shouted, "No food in the park!
As I stood rooted in place, slack-jawed, scanning for allies and/or police officers, she snarled, "Food causes fights. " Luckily I'd had a modicum of martial-arts training; this made it possible for me to breathe and stifle the defensive rage roiling inside. Never feed another person's dog.
