Instead, these behaviors are necessary for resolving inevitable social conflict. Both humans and dogs (and wolves, of course) build relationships on the need for partnership in overcoming common problems related to surviving and, preferably, achieving an acceptable level of comfort. Relationships are not built on hierarchies, but they do exist and they do play an important role in certain circumstances—for humans as well as dogs (and wolves of course)—sometimes more, sometimes less and sometimes not at all.
