This is one of them. I’ve always been a big believer in brining (and marinating) – not only for the flavor that it imparts, but it’s something that you can throw together in the morning, tuck in whatever meat you want and leave it until you’re ready for dinner for the most part. But, this buttermilk brine raises that bar even higher. It’s like a magic bath for poultry. –Frances Mayes I cannot support mediocrity and I blame Italy. A few years back, Adam and I had the great pleasure of visiting his parents who had retired to a remarkable villa in Tuscany. To describe Tuscany’s beauty properly would require words that do not exist in my vocabulary and I certainly do not have a firm enough handle on the Italian vernacular to even pretend to do it justice. Tuscany, with its rich and colorful past, is beguiling and beautiful with sleepy hill towns that boast an incredible trove of architectural treasures. One of our day trips took us to Pienza, magnificent in the morning, where we twisted our way around the rugged ramparts of this charming town, stumbling upon another breathtaking vista with each turn, on one of the most delicious days of our journey.

L’Orto di Silvia We sampled pecorino – a sharp, pungent cheese made from sheep’s milk, for which Pienza is famous. Vegetable Latkes - Family Spice. How to Grill EVERYTHING. Chocolate Chip Cake-Easy Cheesecake Recipe-How to Make Cheesecake. Posted by Grace Massa Langlois on Friday, 25th May 2012 My daughter, Liana, asked if I could prepare a Chocolate Chip Cheesecake for a get together she was attending this week. The request came after what was to have been a quick stop at Costco for a few things and I emphasize a few things, vanilla beans, meat and juice. I don’t know about you but I can never leave Costco without a full shopping cart.

And somehow we were able to fill two on this trip. To my dismay we left Costco without my coveted vanilla beans and I was told they were no longer going to stock them. Sometimes I wonder if Costco enjoys torturing their clients? I love the taste of vanilla! I’ve been reading a new book, Bake Wise by Shirley Corriher. This peaked my curiosity; I wondered how heavy cream would affect the texture of cheesecake. So how did a trip to Costco turn into Liana craving chocolate chip cheesecake? Great news! Happy Weekend! I’d never had purple potatoes before until recently, and I feel just a little like I’m late to the party and that someone has been keeping this incredible secret from me all this time. Not only are they such a pretty colour both on the outside and inside of the potato, but they have a sort of earthy, nutty flavour and have more antioxidants than regular potatoes.

Now that I’m in on the secret I’m going to be hunting them out every week at the farmer’s market or our local grocery store this summer for certain. This isn’t really a usual sort of potato salad, there’s no mayonnaise for one thing, although I certainly wouldn’t claim it to be a healthy alternative (you’ll see when you get to the recipe). But it’s a nice change from a cold potato salad and a different sort of flavor too. If you don’t have the time to chill anything in the refrigerator or you’re going to be bringing it to a potluck or picnic where you wont be able to chill anything then it’s pretty perfect.
