Le spectateur découvre au cours de ce long-métrage des images inédites de Monsieur André, Invader, Zevs, Banksy ou encore Obey, filmées par Thierry Guetta, vidéaste amateur névrosé obsessionnel dont la réalité paraît totalement improbable. Vaste fumisterie ou œuvre de génie, tout porte à croire que nous sommes en présence d’un véritable « documenteur » savamment orchestré par Banksy… car le film parle en fait peu de Banksy mais se focalise de manière progressive sur ce Français mégalo installé aux USA, cousin de Space Invader ( !)

Brainwash, has been created to dupe the art world and mock the burgeoning art-factory system. Mr. Brainwash himself, a.k.a. Thierry Guetta, didn’t respond to her queries, but we spent three hours with Mr. Brainwash before the opening of his recent Manhattan art show "Icons. " So, this show is about icons. I know a little bit about Bill Gates. Um, is that how you hope people approach you? Like I say in the end of the film, I said, I cannot judge you. Plenty say this feels like a prank. Ce baratineur illuminé, dont l'accent français à lui seul est un gag récurrent, a fait en 2008 une sorte de hold-up sur le marché de l'art, lançant sa carrière avec une exposition géante regorgeant de peintures improvisées en quelques heures, exécutées par une armée d'assistants, et avec lesquelles il plagie, sur un mode totalement trash, les oeuvres de ceux qu'il avait filmés au cours des années précédentes (qui exploitaient eux-mêmes largement l'art du détournement et de la citation).

Guetta does not typically have much physical involvement in the construction of the artwork attributed to him; he passes ideas to his creative team, mostly graphic designers who carry out the artistic side instead of Guetta. Mimicking his associate Banksy, Guetta employs famous artistic and historic images, many of which are copyrighted, and amends the originals in sometimes slight, sometimes significant ways. A number of critics have observed that his works strongly emulate the styles and concepts of Banksy, and have speculated that Guetta is an elaborate prank staged by Banksy who may have created the works himself.
Banksy insists on his official website, however, that Exit Through the Gift Shop is authentic and that Guetta is not part of a prank.[2] Art and exhibitions[edit] The development of this whimsical Pop-Graffiti art style has catapulted MBW to international superstardom, and he continues to garner recognition from art collectors and street art enthusiasts alike. Il y a quelques semaines, le film du renommé banksy « exit through the gift shop » ("Faites le mur" pour la version francaise qui est en ce moment au cinéma) est sorti en DVD au royaume uni et j’en ai profité pour voir ce documentaire que j’avais loupé au moment de sa sortie à Londres.
Le héros de ce film n’est pas banksy mais un certain Thierry Guetta qui de cinéaste amateur devient un acteur majeur de la scène street art américaine « artiste » aux commandes d’une véritable entreprise d’art, j'ai nommé Mr Brainwash. A la fin du documentaire, je ne savais trop que penser de cet homme devenu complètement pédant avec l'accession à la notoriété mais après avoir lu des articles sur le sujet, il m'est encore difficile de démêler le vrai du faux et je me demande maintenant qui est vraiment ce Mr Brainwash... Il a quand même désigné la couverture de l'album "celebration" de Madonna mais a t il été créé de toute pièce par Banksy pour critiquer la dérive commerciale du street art?
