In March, Wichita Rutherford, 42, of Nashville was a pool cleaner with a passion for bluegrass. Then the amateur musician learned about podcasting—a new way to host and distribute your own audio shows online—and his life changed. He bought two microphones for $14 each, plugged them into a Mac and bought some space on the Web (at www.libsyn.com) for $5 a month. Within a week, he was conducting, recording and posting interviews with Nashville performers. The resulting sensation—as more than 200,000 regular listeners can attest—is his show “Five Minutes With Wichita” (www.5minuteswithwichita.com), the Internet’s hottest bluegrass podcast. A podcast is an audio file posted to an online journal (blog) or Web site and linked by a line of code called an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed.
