Marble Fudge Squares. Marble fudge squares was one of my favorite treats that my mom use to make when I was still living at home. They are so incredibly delicious! The cake is chocolaty with a hint of sour cream, then swirled with cream cheese (which I always love!) And topped with chocolate chips. They are the texture of a cake, not a brownie, but I eat them more like I would eat a brownie. You can cut them into squares, pick them up and eat them. My mom doesn't remember where the original recipe came from. She thinks it came off the back of a coupon or a magazine years ago. Ingredients: Cream cheese swirl: 8oz pkg cream cheese, softened 1/3 cup sugar 1 egg Cake: 2 cups flour 1 teas. baking soda 1/2 teas. salt 2 cups sugar 1/2 cup butter 3/4 cup water 1&1/2 oz unsweetened baking chocolate 2 eggs 1/2 cup sour cream( I used reduced fat and didn't notice a difference) 6oz semi-sweet chocolate chips Beat cream cheese mixture until smooth, set aside.

Daring Bakers July Challenge: Part 1 or The Easiest Ice Cream… Ever | Tiffin Tales. I’ve always wanted to be a part of a secret club. As a kid, this was a fantasy that involved secret passwords and solving crimes (Enid Blyton phase); older teenage versions included men that looked like Hugh Jackman in a tux and women who wore slinky red outfits and smoked those thin, long cigarettes (romance novel phase). I have vague recollections of even starting a club in middle school – I was the president, of course. The reason I say vague is because this club didn’t actually do anything. We just hung around, drank a lot of lemonade and gossiped about boys.

(Things don’t change too much, do they? So when I read about the Daring Bakers , a group of food lovers that got together and invented challenges and kept them secret from the rest of the world until the end of the month, of course I wanted in ! But my heart sank a little when I read the challenge. The secret solution (as to most of life’s problems) is alcohol – it keeps the ice cream from freezing too hard. 1. 2. 3.

Enjoy. 1. Oreo truffles (snowballs) TGIF, friends. Hope that you all have had a lovely week, and that a relaxing weekend lies ahead. I’m looking forward to some friend’s-birthday-celebrating, farmers-marketing, coffee-(friends)-dating, cake-baking, church-enjoying, and sleeping-inning here in my little corner of the world this weekend. OH, and the thing I’m perhaps most excited about — choir-directing. Did I mention on here that I’m leading an Easter choir at my church?! I’m kind of over the moon about it. Our little midtown church is overflowing with artists and talented musicians, but all of the singers have never come together to actually do the choir thing in worship before…until now.

Which makes this former choir director really happy! Anyway, warm wishes coming your way for a good weekend ahead. It’s been a cold and rainy one where I am, but what better time for a sweet and sticky comfort food: Taffy Tart Squares (also known to some as Butter Tart Squares). My husband goes away into the wilderness this time every year with his Dad and a group of men for several days, and I always make these for them.

(A crowd favourite, I’m told.) I’ve also been baking these squares as a classic holiday treat for the past few years, because they are so loved, and because you can make them ahead of time and freeze. You can eat them as they are (delightful), or if you want to make it even more divine and turn it into a full-on dessert, you can cut a nice big square and microwave for about 20 seconds, then place on top of vanilla bean ice cream, breaking it up a bit with a spoon. With every bite you get a bit of everything: warm gooey topping, crunchy pecans, cold and creamy vanilla, and rich cookie. Not to state the obvious, but it is heaven. Me neither. Ingredients. I love living in a big city, I love my career at a huge corporation, I love living in a Condo across the street from the Metro, I love being DINKs (Double Income No Kids) and I love all of my single party friends. But this recipe made me want to live in a little small town community with a bunch of stay at home moms and little old ladies so that I could organize a Christmas cookie exchange and make dozens of batches of these cookies for mass distribution.

The end product was so cute and oh so delicious. They were begging to be made in bulk! And maybe I am being close minded. Cookie exchanges can happen anywhere I suppose. Freshly Baked Stories, Recipes and Photos: A Really Bad Idea.

WARNING : If, like me, you are prone to becoming obsessed with a certain food and wanting to eat nothing but that food for many days on end, then this recipe is probably a very, very bad idea for you. Because really, it has been quite a while since I’ve come across something so addictive. It will dominate your thoughts and appetite until the only evidence of it having existed at all is a smattering of crumbs. And there you’ll stand, alone at the counter twinged with sadness, wondering where it all went and kind of not remembering that you are the one who ate it all . I give you Cookie Brittle. Everyone needs a little wake up reminder every once in a while – I received mine, earlier this week, when I managed to give myself a pretty bad cut on my thumb while cooking, which resulted in a trip to Urgent Care.

Fortunately, I didn’t end up needing stitches – but I was given a tetanus shot and told to take it easy on my hand the next few days. Unfortunately, this happened right before the monthly Diablo Valley Pagan‘s Meet & Greet – which means that I was scrambling that day, trying to come up with something easy and simple to bring with me. Of course the whole week was kinda meh – the thumb was just the crappy icing on a crappy cake. We had a whole week straight of storms – and rainy weather never really brings out my happy-happy side, nevermind the fact that a certain young Miss Thing was having issues with a homework assignment this week.

We’ve also developed a new obsession – one of my sisters had mentioned that we might like a show called Dexter. Ingredients: Method: Peppermint Patties - What Megan's Making. Peppermint Patties One thing I love to do in the kitchen is to create homemade versions of store-bought treats. It’s probably why I love homemade oreos and homemade hostess cupcakes so much. Naturally, when I saw a recipe for homemade peppermint patties, I knew I had to make them. These make a fun and unique addition to your Christmas candy bowl, and trust me, people will be impressed that you made these yourself. No need to tell them how easy they are to make! Good quality chocolate is what makes these stand out. *Note: I would recommend a shot glass for cutting out your circles. Red Velvet Fudge. I suddenly got this brilliant idea that I wanted to make Red Velvet fudge. So I sat down and googled it, hoping for a great, no fail recipe.

Those words are very important to a bad recipe follower like myself. No such luck. I couldnt even find a match for 'red velvet fudge'. I was totally dejected. Then it hit me... At the very least, significantly modify an existing one. I started here, with Martha's Foolproof Holiday Fudge. I added food coloring and used white chocolate chips and red cherry flavored chips. Talk about significant modifications. Thing is, this recipe is just not my favorite.

(side by side comparison of the two recipes I made... So then I found a recipe on allrecipes.com. I figured, if I could make a recipe for red velvet fudge, like real red velvet fudge, it would be from this one. Ingredients: 2 cups white sugar 1/4 cup cocoa 1 cup buttermilk 3 tablespoons butter 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp red gel food coloring Directions: Reduce heat and allow fudge to simmer.

Happy Holidays! Freshly Baked Stories, Recipes and Photos: Chubby Hubby Brownies. A few days after Christmas, I was hurriedly rolling through Target with Little C, enduring her kicks to my femurs from that kid seat thing they put in shopping carts. I rounded a corner and saw an explosion of pink and red and hearts and glitter.

They were putting up Valentine’s Day stuff before New Year’s, people! I was still bloated from Christmas dinner! This all felt . Like one of Those People, I confronted the staff member assembling the display and was all, “Hey, let me have my holiday hangover one holiday at a time, Target!” , and she was all, “Hey, Andy Rooney , why don’t you just chill out and feel the love?!” (Actually, the Target staffer didn’t really say that, I think she was mostly just startled by my crazy ponytail and dowdy post-Christmas binge ensemble of Fat Pants and an unreasonably large tunic.

A few days later, however, I did indeed get to thinking about Valentine’s Day treats because apparently I am very influenced by marketing and mortifying experiences at Target. Chocolate Salted Caramel Tart. I had a great story to tell you about these tarts involving me and my sister in Paris, a scrumptious round of Camembert grillé and a crunchy baguette, a long walk on foot from my sister's tiny apartment at rue Miollis (15ème arrondissement) to rue Cail (10ème), samosas at Krishna and shopping spices at Ganesha, then on our way back dropping ourselves in a small local pastry shop (not as trendy as Hermé or Aoki, but with it's own charm) for these little salted caramel life boosters and a looong walk on foot (again) to rue Cler(7ème) for a late Friday night Mojito with friends. Yup, comfy shoes on our feet and large smiles on our faces – this is all we needed not to care about the rain nor the cool winter wind. But the cursor was blinking nasty on the white page and although my head was full of stories, nothing was coming out of my fingers on the keyboard. After a week the page was still white and the cursor was still blinking as if laughing at me.
