Soft 'n Snugly Baby Quilt. Recently I needed to make a baby quilt for a gift, but didn’t have much time and not quite enough material to make what I had in mind. Then I remembered my friend Traci makes these really cute rag quilts with fabric scraps and I thought maybe I could try to do something similar. As I was sorting through my scraps I got the idea to make a quilt of all of my different “soft and textured” fabrics. Since babies like lots of different textures I thought it might be kind of fun to make a quilt with lots of different fabrics. I ended up using corduroy, minke, flannel, chenille and satin all on the same quilt. This is how I made it: I started by gathering fabrics that all coordinated and cut them into random sizes. I then just started sewing the strips together.
After I thought the quilt looked like a good size I stopped sewing on extra strips. I then quilted it with a stitch in the ditch over the seams, using more flannel as the backing. For the binding I used some satin blanket binding. Fat Quarter Baby Dress & Quilt. I love Fat Quarters. I discovered them a couple of years ago. I think I love them for the same reason that I love pattern paper… getting a little bit of lots of different prints in one package just makes me happy :) I have been buying more fat quarters than yardage lately, which is economical yet sometimes doesn’t give me enough fabric to complete a project so I have to get a bit “creative” with the use of them. Which by the way, has lead to some of my favorite projects. (and why most of my sewing patterns can be made using fat quarters). This little baby gift is made from 6 fat quarters and 1 yard of fabric (for the backing).
It’s a little pillowcase dress & stroller size quilt (it’s small about 30×30 finished). My guess is this is sized about 6 months. I really like the way it came out… but I want to do a few things differently next time.. so I think I’ll do a little series here this summer on pillowcase dresses… this one being the first. Ok to start you need: 2 yards of ribbon Batting.

(And clean out that closet, scrub the baby bouncer, clean out the fridge, stock up on more baby necessities, and maybe organize the kids closet……okay and scrub the toilets. But that husband of mine is so good at that one. We’re going to have to make some deals.) I keep thinking maybe by chance I’ll go into labor early. Did she come? Nope. Who wouldn’t love a sweet new hat/blanket set for their new baby? . Or swaddling blanket. Success. Knit Receiving Blanket/Knit Baby Hats Part 2. Okay, part 2 is here. Did you see the knit baby blanket tutorial yesterday (found here)? Well, here is a great way to complete a little baby set…….by adding a simple, yet cozy, knit baby hat. Or, hmmmm, maybe 3! The hats are made from cotton interlock knit…..so they are perfectly stretchy and comfy. And while making one,why not make a couple more? And don’t forget the fluffy little knit flowers. If you’re making these for boys, you could applique a shape or a name right there on the front too. But those girls, they need some flowers!
Did you make the blanket from yesterday already? Or at least buy/order some knit? If not, hurry it up………you’ll love how both of these projects turn out. Ready to make some little knit hats?. Before getting started, keep in mind……that the shape of these hats are one dimensional. As mentioned in the baby blanket tutorial from yesterday, I found my knit here. First, I pre-washed my knit. I made my hats a size 0-3…….and are assuming they’ll fit just fine.
And that’s it. Faux Chenille Blanket.
