Paper Sludge - Waste Disposal Problem or Energy Opportunity, 1999 Engineering Conference Proceedings. RISI - Pulp & Paper Industry Tool Kit. Paper recycling. Waste paper collected for recycling in Italy Paper recycling is the process of turning waste paper into new paper products. There are three categories of paper that can be used as feedstocks for making recycled paper: mill broke, pre-consumer waste, and post-consumer waste.[1] Mill broke is paper trimmings and other paper scrap from the manufacture of paper, and is recycled internally in a paper mill. Pre-consumer waste is material which left the paper mill but was discarded before it was ready for consumer use. Post-consumer waste is material discarded after consumer use, such as old corrugated containers (OCC), old magazines, old newspapers (ONP), office paper, old telephone directories, and residential mixed paper (RMP).[1] Paper suitable for recycling is called "scrap paper", often used to produce molded pulp packaging.

Paper recycling process[edit] The process of paper recycling involves mixing used paper with water and chemicals to break it down. Rationale for recycling[edit] Paper industry. Sustainability. Achieving sustainability will enable the Earth to continue supporting human life. In ecology, sustainability is how biological systems remain diverse and productive. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. In more general terms, sustainability is the endurance of systems and processes. The organizing principle for sustainability is sustainable development, which includes the four interconnected domains: ecology, economics, politics and culture.[1] Sustainability science is the study of sustainable development and environmental science.[2] Healthy ecosystems and environments are necessary to the survival of humans and other organisms.

Etymology[edit] The name sustainability is derived from the Latin sustinere (tenere, to hold; sub, up). Environmental impact of paper. A pulp and paper mill in New Brunswick, Canada. Although pulp and paper manufacturing requires large amounts of energy, a portion of it comes from burning wood residue. The environmental impact of paper is significant, which has led to changes in industry and behaviour at both business and personal levels. With the use of modern technology such as the printing press and the highly mechanised harvesting of wood, disposable paper has become a cheap commodity.

This has led to a high level of consumption and waste. With the rise in environmental awareness due to the lobbying by environmental organizations and with increased government regulation there is now a trend towards sustainability in the pulp and paper industry. Market opportunity for pulp and paper. Markets Following the Paper Trail Overcoming Market Barriers to Environmentally Preferable Paper (EPP) , a study funded by Industry Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs, conducted by the Reach for Unbleached! Foundation and the Aurora Institute, analyses the office paper industry in Canada. The study looks at the Canadian pulp and paper industry within the context of the global industry, and assesses current production levels and markets for EPPs in Canada, identifies obstacles to further market growth, and makes recommendations for stimulating consumer demand as well as production capacity.

Study findings are based on 55 interviews with representatives from key stakeholder groups, focus groups, an Aurora Institute/Ipsos Reid poll of 1005 Canadians on their attitudes and paper purchasing habits, an on-line survey of 137 members of the Purchasing Management Association of Canada (PMAC) and an extensive literature review. Office Paper Buying Club. Buying Paper Why does Paper Matter? It makes a difference when you buy chlorine free, recycled paper. Every 40 cases of paper: Saves 24 trees, 4,100 kWh of energy, 20,000 litres of water, and 3 cubic metres of landfill; Reduces air pollution by three-quarters; and, Lowers water pollution by one third. The impact on greenhouse gases which are affecting global climate is also impressive. The verdict is in from world scientists on climate change and the threat is serious, perhaps the most serious threat that the earth faces today.

Disrupted climate patterns producing a whole range of impacts such as: Canada needs to act now with the rest of the world to reduce the threat of global climate change and here's one easy way. 100% Recycled paper produced 37% less Greenhouse gas emissions than virgin fibre paper. You can save the weight of the paper you use in greenhouse gases by using 100% recycled paper and meet the one tonne challenge with 40 cases of paper.

Office Paper Guide. Reach for Unbleached Clean Air Clean Water Information on Pulp and Paper Mill Pollution. Pulp pollution is a serious problem: Pulp and paper mills pollute our water, air, and soil. The pulp and paper industry is one of the largest and most polluting industries in the world; it is the third most polluting industry in North America. There are about 500 kraft mills, and many thousands of other types of pulp and paper mills, in the world. Primary concerns include the use of chlorine-based bleaches and resultant toxic emissions to air, water, and soil. With global annual growth forecast at 2.5%, the industry, and its negative impacts, could double by 2025. People need paper products and we need sustainable, environmentally safe production.

This site contains the results of over a decade of research into the operations of the pulp and paper industry and its mill processes. Outlook for European White Top Containerboard Markets. European Biomass Review. Renewable energy policy in Europe will see biomass demand grow by almost 50% between 2010 and 2020 with increased use of biomass not only in the energy sector but also in industrial and residential sectors. Biomass is currently the largest source of renewable energy in Europe and is a relatively attractive option. However, unless new sources of biomass are developed beyond current levels, Europe will face an acute shortage of biomass. What is the potential to increase regional supply for biomass from forest and other sources and what actions are being taken to release the potential?

The key to the future development of European biomass markets resides in the region's supply potential; and how well it can mobilize new sources of supply, such as forest, agricultural residues and energy crops. European Biomass Review provides three scenarios for the mobilization of new sources based on demand forecasts -by segment until 2020-, supply potential and costs.

Converters (industry) Converting companies are companies that specialize in combining raw materials such as polyesters, adhesives, silicone, tapes, foams, plastics, felts, rubbers, liners and metals, as well as other materials, to create new products. Materials such as paper, plastic film, foil and cloth often are produced in long, continuous sheets that are rolled up for more-convenient handling and transportation.

These rolls of material vary significantly in size and weight — ranging from 2 to 200 in. wide and weighing as much as several tons. The converting industry takes these continuous rolls of thin, flat materials — known as webs — threads them though processing machines (such as printing presses, laminating, coating and slitting machines) and converts or changes the web of material into an intermediate form or final product. For example, a converter’s equipment might take a web of plastic film, cut it into lengths, and fuse their edges, thus converting it into plastic bags. Pulp and paper industry. The industry is dominated by North American (United States and Canada), northern European (Finland, Sweden, and North-West Russia) and East Asian countries (such as East Siberian Russia, China, Japan, and South Korea). Australasia and Brazil also have significant pulp and paper enterprises. The United States had been the world's leading producer of paper until it was overtaken by China in 2009.[1] The industry is criticized by environmental groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council for unsustainable deforestation and clearcutting of old-growth forest.[2] The industry trend is to expand globally to countries like Russia, China and Indonesia with low wages and low environmental oversight.[3] According to Greenpeace, farmers in Central America illegally rip up vast tracts of native forest for cattle and soybean production without any consequences[4] and companies who buy timber from private land owners contribute to massive deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest.[5] 2007[edit]
