Homework « Mrs. Kilburn's Kiddos

From my experience, every teacher is a little different with how they perceive and give homework. Personally, I believe in a more positive approach to homework. I give students activities to complete that are more of a review of the concepts that have been taught. I also believe that parents and teachers should be partners in educating students. Bulletin Board Suggestions. Mitten Tree Winter Display. While we do associate winter with Christmas and New Years, for teachers who don't have time to change their bulletin board displays multiple times during the season, a simple winter-themed display works well because of it's versatility and "built in" festivity!

Mitten Tree Winter Display

This kindergarten teacher decided to combine her seasonal wall display with her lesson on mitten patterning and the results are fantastic! To duplicate the original craft, create a card stock mitten template for students to trace onto craft paper. Armed with washable markers in assorted colors, have your students practice making their own patterns and designs on the mittens. This might also be a great time to throw in a lesson on color theory (e.g. complimentary colors, primary v. secondary colors, etc.).

This wall display is simple, festive, and will last through the entire winter! Our Class is Cool Bulletin Board Suggestion. DLTK's Easy Penguin Craft. Footprint Penguin Craft. Kids Crafts > Holiday Crafts > Winter > Footprint Penguin Craft Our daughter loves penguins, so this craft was created when she asked to make a penguin during craft time one weekend morning.

Footprint Penguin Craft

This is a great animal craft for toddlers to help teach them about penguins and where they live as well as a great winter craft! We both love it because the body of the penguin is made by tracing her foot so I plan to keep making footprint penguins every year to watch how my own little penguin has grown! Contributed by Leanne Guenther This is a simple cut and paste paper craft good "just for fun", a bird theme, or a winter theme made from a basic egg shape.

Penguin Paper Craft

You can turn it into a handprint craft by replacing the wings with handprints traced onto a piece of paper. Have a look at the penguins made by Anita's Rainbow Guide unit. Materials: Penguin Cutout.

Reading Skills. The importance of pre-reading skills It goes without saying that children must be aware of letters and words before they can learn to read. Children hear language all around them and even see words printed in books and on signs, but they do not always make the connection that a group of letters form a word that has meaning. To become confident, successful readers, children need a strong foundation of pre-reading skills. A large component of pre-reading activities is developing what educators refer to as “phonemic awareness.” Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and isolate the specific sounds (called phonemes) in a word. Rhyming Worksheets - Phonics for Kids. Preschool Math: Mastering Number Recognition and Counting. Learning about numbers is a preschooler’s first step toward becoming a budding young mathematician. And in preschool, math learning is all about counting, number recognition, and one-to-one correspondence. If a child doesn’t ace these seemingly simple skills in a timely manner, don’t fret: even math whizzes need time to blossom. But with age appropriate techniques, helping your child to master these math milestones will be as easy as 1, 2, 3! In an attempt to foster their child’s academic development, many well meaning parents may be tempted to provide flash cards as an initial learning tool. This is not the best method for teaching young children math skills with understanding, says Grace Davila Coates, Program Director of Family Math (Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkeley) and co-author of Family Math for Young Children. To help make learning the basics of mathematical thinking fun for your preschool child, try a few of these playful activities.
