Scientific Integrity. Models in Science. 1. Semantics: Models and Representation Models can perform two fundamentally different representational functions. On the one hand, a model can be a representation of a selected part of the world (the ‘target system’). Depending on the nature of the target, such models are either models of phenomena or models of data. On the other hand, a model can represent a theory in the sense that it interprets the laws and axioms of that theory. These two notions are not mutually exclusive as scientific models can be representations in both senses at the same time. 1.1 Representational models I: models of phenomena Many scientific models represent a phenomenon, where ‘phenomenon’ is used as an umbrella term covering all relatively stable and general features of the world that are interesting from a scientific point of view.

Other than the tenacious grip of Culture War, what evidence can I offer? One casualty: the assertive, pragmatic approach to negotiation and human-wrought progress that used to be mother's milk to this civilization. Yes, there were initial signs of all this, even in the 1990s. 125th Anniversary Issue: Science Online Special Feature.
