Nicolaus Copernicus was a Polish astronomer who put forth the theory that the Sun is at rest near the center of the Universe, and that the Earth, spinning on its axis once daily, revolves annually around the Sun. This is called the heliocentric, or Sun-centered, system. Copernicus was born on February 19, 1473, in Thorn (now Torun), Poland. Nicolaus Copernicus is the Latin version of his name, which he chose later in life as was the custom among scientists of the day. His original name may have been Mikolaj Kopernik. Copernicus studied law and medicine at the Universities of Bologna and Padua, then returned to Poland after witnessing a lunar eclipse in Rome in 1500. In 1504, Copernicus began the research that culminated in his heliocentric theory. 1) There is no one center in the Universe. 2) The Earth's center is not the center of the Universe. 3) The center of the universe is near the Sun. Copernicus biography

The original form of his name was Mikolaj Kopernik or Nicolaus Koppernigk but we shall use Copernicus throughout this article. His father, also called Nicolaus Koppernigk, had lived in Kraków before moving to Torun where he set up a business trading in copper. When young Nicolaus was ten years old his father died. Nicolaus Copernicus

Life and Works Nicolaus Copernicus was born on 19 February 1473, the youngest of four children of Nicolaus Copernicus, Sr., a well-to-do merchant who had moved to Torun from Cracow, and Barbara Watzenrode, the daughter of a leading merchant family in Torun. The city, on the Vistula River, had been an important inland port in the Hanseatic League.

However, fighting between the Order of the Teutonic Knights and the Prussian Union in alliance with the Kingdom of Poland ended in 1466, and West Prussia, which included Torun, was ceded to Poland, and Torun was declared a free city of the Polish kingdom. Thus the child of a German family was a subject of the Polish crown. The father died in 1483, and the children's maternal uncle, Lucas Watzenrode (1447–1512), took them under his protection. In 1495 Watzenrode arranged Copernicus's election as canon of the chapter of Frombork (Frauenberg in German) of the Cathedral Chapter of Warmia, an administrative position just below that of bishop. 2. Nicolaus Copernicus - Facts & Summary. You're almost done!

Biography - Polish astronomer. Alternate title: Mikołaj Kopernik Nicolaus Copernicus, Polish Mikołaj Kopernik (born February 19, 1473, Toruń, Poland—died May 24, 1543, Frauenburg, East Prussia [now Frombork, Poland]), Polish astronomer who proposed that the planets have the Sun as the fixed point to which their motions are to be referred; that the Earth is a planet which, besides orbiting the Sun annually, also turns once daily on its own axis; and that very slow, long-term changes in the direction of this axis account for the precession of the equinoxes.
