Smartgeometry 2012: manta - acoustically responsive sculpture. 'manta' by guillermo bernal, zackery belanger, eric ameres, and seth edwards as part of smartgeometry, 2012 all images © michael villardi designers guillermo bernal , zackery belanger , eric ameres , and seth edwards have sent designboom their project 'manta', an acoustically reactive suspended sculpture developed as part of smartgeometry 2012 a four-day workshop and symposium in troy, new york, USA. the interdisciplinary project is a dynamic manifestation displaying the incorporation of architecture, fabrication, interactive technology and research in acoustics into an actualized form.

Of high-density polyethylene while it's shape results from bending stiffness and triangulation. the hanging piece makes use of its rigging, infrastructure and home in an acoustically inert environment in order to become a truly kinetic sculptural work. the sculpture slowly moves due to the influence of the individual standing just underneath its frame the group of smartgeometry 2012 troy experiences 'manta' Manta. Ecotect Acoustics. Interactive Art and Computational Design, Spring 2012 » Final Project – Tunable surface: crowd driven acoustic behavior. What is it about? ————————————————————- This project builds a workflow between a crowd simulation and an acoustic simulation with the aim to control the acoustic experience of space by taking into account the given crowd configuration. Overview ———————————————————————— The geometry of a space can significantly affect its acoustic performance.

Background ——————————————————————– This project was motivated by the work developed in the context of the Smart Geometry 2012 workshop by the Reactive Acoustic Environments Cluster, which I joined as a participant. Below a couple of photos and a link that summarize the work done during the Smart Geometry Workshop: Manta, Reactive Acoustic Environments cluster leaders: Zackery Belanger, J Seth Edwards, Guillermo Bernal, Eric Ameres Other precedent work that focuses on the topic of how geometry can be explored in order to affect the acoustic experience of space: Virtual Anechoic Chamber Tunable Sound Cloud.

Johanna Huang, Candidate Master. Voces Intimae piano trio - Mozart Dice Game. TESSEL. Tessel is a kinetic sound installation investigating the perception of sound and space, it's constituted of a suspended and articulated topography of 4 x 2 m, subdivided into forty triangles. Twelve of them are fitted with motors and eight are equipped with audio transducers, which transform the surface into a dynamic sonic space. A dialogue between space and sound is created through this sculptural "choreography". Our perception is altered, as the surface slowly modifies its shape.

From Tinguely's poetic machines to Alexander Calder's mobiles or Buckminster Fuller's synergetics, Tessel combines influences that question the link between geometry, movement and chaos, thus continuing the quest for beauty in the synesthetic perception of sound and spatial phenomenons. The installation is on show right at TAG in the Hague as you can see on the pictures and will be on show at the Club Transmediale in Berlin opening 28th of January 2011.
