The current stable version is Android 10, released on September 3, 2019. The core Android source code is known as Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which is primarily licensed under the Apache License. This has allowed variants of Android to be developed on a range of other electronics, such as game consoles, digital cameras, PCs and others, each with a specialized user interface. Google Signals Android 2.3 'Gingerbread' is Done Baking

Google has dropped yet another clue that the company's next iteration of its Android mobile operating system is ready to be served up to users—literally. The official Google Mobile Twitter account now links to a rather suspicious image of a plethora of gingerbread cookies that have been baked in the style of, you guessed it, the Android logo. The culinary move comes in the wake of Google's first big clue that Gingerbread was nearing release—the launch of a giant Gingerbread man in the front of the company's Mountain View, Calif. headquarters. It's been a longstanding tradition that larger-than-life replications of the company's mobile OS codenames, all conveniently themed around delicious desserts, get added to the ever-expanding "sculpture gallery" at Google. Android 2.3 Gingerbread confirmed, headed to developer Nexus One handsets "in next few days" With Google's well known dessert-themed naming convention for its Android mobile OS, there has already been some buzz regarding the next update to follow Android 2.2 Froyo.

Codenamed Gingerbread and scheduled for release before the end of the year, the company had previously said it would be focusing more on the UI design and user experience. But apart from its tasty codename, a lot of speculation has surrounded the version number of the release, whether it would simply be the next 2.x update or more significantly whether it would jump up to 3.0 as a sign of more significant rumored changes. It finally looks like there is some confirmation on this issue with a member of the leadership team at the Open Handset Alliance, Alvaro Fuentes Vasquez, tweeting that Gingerbread will be Android 2.3, with an Over-The-Air update headed to developer Nexus One handsets "in the next few days" and other N1s likely to follow soon after.
