The Protester - Person of the Year 2011. Once upon a time, when major news events were chronicled strictly by professionals and printed on paper or transmitted through the air by the few for the masses, protesters were prime makers of history. Back then, when citizen multitudes took to the streets without weapons to declare themselves opposed, it was the very definition of news — vivid, important, often consequential. In the 1960s in America they marched for civil rights and against the Vietnam War; in the '70s, they rose up in Iran and Portugal; in the '80s, they spoke out against nuclear weapons in the U.S. and Europe, against Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, against communist tyranny in Tiananmen Square and Eastern Europe. Protest was the natural continuation of politics by other means.

And then came the End of History, summed up by Francis Fukuyama's influential 1989 essay declaring that mankind had arrived at the "end point of ... ideological evolution" in globally triumphant "Western liberalism. " The Rebirth of the Feminist Manifesto. Daughter of a Maoist. Terrorised by the police, bereft of parents, evicted from school—what it means to be a 15-year-old daughter of parents ‘wanted’ by the State I first met her when she was around 10 or 11 months old.

Her mother Shyna was a friend and source. At the time, Shyna was an upper division clerk in the High Court. She was also an activist trying to set up a trade union in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Kochi. As a TV reporter, I had frequent contact with Shyna. She often gave me story tips from the SEZ, to which the media didn’t have much access. After 15 years, when I met the girl, she was not Ameranta but Ami.

By then Shyna and her husband Roopesh had become ‘wanted’ Maoists. Ami and her eight-year-old sister Savera now live in Shyna’s house at Valappadu in Thrissur district in Kerala. I was 12 years old when we were picked up by the police. A few days after, they raided our house again. This is only one side of the story. After a long gap, I met papa and Naina last summer. I pledge that I will die as Muslim. Should I be killed, I would like to be buried, according to Muslim rituals, in the clothes I was wearing at the time of my death and my body unwashed, in the cemetery of Sirte, next to my family and relatives. I would like that my family, especially women and children, be treated well after my death. The Libyan people should protect its identity, achievements, history, and the honorable image of its ancestors and heroes.

I call on my supporters to continue the resistance, and fight any foreign aggressor against Libya, today, tomorrow, and always. Let the free people of the world know that we could have bargained over and sold out our cause in return for a personal secure and stable life. . | Print. Privacy Policy - October 13, 2011. Privacy PolicyOn the public commodification of privacy. We have no more privacy. That’s what we’re told; certainly it’s something we feel. Of course it’s been thrilling, for those of us with the means and the Internet, to be more connected to each other and the world than we could have ever imagined. We can correspond at lightening speed. Vast, seemingly infinite quantities of information — more than we ever knew existed, more than we know how to process — is available for our consumption at any hour of the day or night. We the non-celebrities are making ourselves more available, in vaster quantities.

We want access to information. “[Facebook] is just a few updates away now from euthanizing the concept of privacy,” Ben Parr recently warned on the social media website Mashable. Yet, is there anything that we do in private that we don't do in public anymore? Consider a street in 19th-century France. Baudelaire takes pleasure in his work. Nonetheless, one must be careful. Who Killed Che? This month marks the forty-fourth anniversary of Che Guevara’s murder. An analysis of government documents collected in a new book reveals a complex CIA scheme.

It was also the most unstable country in Latin America, having gone through more than 190 changes in government since it became an independent republic in 1825. Constantio Apasa, a Bolivian tin miner, summed up the political situation in his country in the year that Che arrived: “When the MNR (Revolutionary Nationalist Movement) came to power in 1952, we felt it was a workers’ party and things would be different. Che arrived in Bolivia via Uruguay in early November of 1966 disguised as a Uruguayan businessman.
