10 Psychological States You've Never Heard Of... and When You Experienced Them. Death - Grief, Loss, Death & Dying. Review - Deathby Shelly KaganYale University Press, 2012Review by Brad Frazier, Ph.D.Jun 25th 2013 (Volume 17, Issue 26) Death, by Shelly Kagan, a philosopher at Yale, is a book based on a course Kagan regularly teaches at Yale.

The book is advertised as part of "The Open Yale Courses Series. " Accordingly, the intended audience for the book consists of a "wide variety" of "curious" readers who are looking for an introduction to the topic of death from a philosophically informed perspective. (I am not going to discuss here the ongoing debate about massive open online courses, or "MOOCs" as they are called). Death turns out to be a whopper: 16 chapters and 376 pages -- including the index and suggestions for further reading.

The basic structure of the book is relatively simple, though. Kagan ably defends a physicalist view in the first half of Death. This is no doubt true -- that in Kagan's hands, death is not very mysterious. . © 2013 Brad Frazier. Brain and Behavior. Easily Publish Gorgeous Magazines. - StumbleUpon. A Theory on the Deja Vu or Déjà vu Phenomenon During the time while this web-page has been on the Internet, more than three thousand people (up to Nov 2009) have e-mailed to say that they have Déjà Vu experiences. That is interesting, but their descriptions have virtually always described some different phenomenon. If a person has any pre-knowledge of something that is yet to happen, like in a dream, it cannot be Déjà Vu, and is likely to be some type of Precognition. (Even if the Precognition is only a few seconds before the event.)

A person cannot know that a Déjà Vu experience is coming, and also, it is also always sensed as INSTANTANEOUS, as being a sudden realization that an experience "was somehow familiar". This last part effectively eliminates credible Deja Vu from occurring in any place that the person has already been! Now, YOU certainly believe that you can remember ALL the experiences you have ever had, and that there could not possibly be any forgotten memories in you! 25 Beautifully Illustrated Thought-Provoking Questions. 405 Flares Facebook 137 Twitter 5 Google+ 194 StumbleUpon 1 Pin It Share 68 68 405 Flares × A question that makes you think is worth asking… At the cusp of a new day, week, month, or year, most of us take a little time to reflect on our lives by looking back over the past and ahead into the future. Science & Nature - Human Body and Mind - Mind. Why Do Some People Learn Faster? &124; Wired Science&&124; Wired.com - StumbleUpon. The physicist Niels Bohr once defined an expert as “a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field.” Bohr’s quip summarizes one of the essential lessons of learning, which is that people learn how to get it right by getting it wrong again and again. Education isn’t magic. Education is the wisdom wrung from failure. A new study, forthcoming in Psychological Science, and led by Jason Moser at Michigan State University, expands on this important concept. The question at the heart of the paper is simple: Why are some people so much more effective at learning from their mistakes?

After all, everybody screws up. The important part is what happens next. The Moser experiment is premised on the fact that there are two distinct reactions to mistakes, both of which can be reliably detected using electroenchephalography, or EEG. It turned out that those subjects with a growth mindset were significantly better at learning from their mistakes. Image: mujalifah/Flickr. Top 10 Bizarre Mental Case Studies. Humans With an average weight of 1.36 kilograms, the human brain is truly something to marvel at. It is difficult to believe that something akin to a malformed sponge, at first glance, contains over 100 million neurons and 100 trillion synaptic connections. Indeed, an organ as intricate as our brain will, no doubt, be riddled with its fair share of problems. This list deals with 10 people who have experienced just that; a part of their brains has gone awry in some form or another. The benefits of meditation. Studies have shown that meditating regularly can help relieve symptoms in people who suffer from chronic pain, but the neural mechanisms underlying the relief were unclear.

Now, MIT and Harvard researchers have found a possible explanation for this phenomenon. In a study published online April 21 in the journal Brain Research Bulletin, the researchers found that people trained to meditate over an eight-week period were better able to control a specific type of brain waves called alpha rhythms. “These activity patterns are thought to minimize distractions, to diminish the likelihood stimuli will grab your attention,” says Christopher Moore, an MIT neuroscientist and senior author of the paper. “Our data indicate that meditation training makes you better at focusing, in part by allowing you to better regulate how things that arise will impact you.” A 1966 study showed that a group of Buddhist monks who meditated regularly had elevated alpha rhythms across their brains. 21stC: Issue 3.4, Winter 1999, "Strange Science" Visual illusions That Tell About Your Psychological Condition. (A 'Galaxy' Most Popular) A recent paradigm-shattering discovery in neuroscience shows how our minds share actions, emotions, and experience what we commonly call "the monkey see, monkey do" experience. When we see someone laugh, cry, show disgust, or experience pain, in some sense, we share that emotion. When we see someone in distress, we share that distress. When we see a great actor, musician or sportsperson perform at the peak of their abilities, it can feel like we are experiencing just something of what they are experiencing.

Only recently, however, with the discovery of mirror neurons, has it become clear just how this powerful sharing of experience is realized within the human brain. These results had a deep impact on cognitive neuroscience, leading the the world's leading experts to predict that 'mirror neurons would do for psychology what DNA did for biology'. Mirror neurons may also help explain the emergence of language, a problem that has puzzled scholars since the time of Charles Darwin, he adds. Background Each of us at one point or another in our lives, has wondered; "Who am I? " Psychology of Persuasion. Do you want to be an agent of change? Psychological research reveals how to tip the balance in your favour. All human societies are alive with the battle for influence. Every single day each of us is subject to innumerable persuasion attempts from corporations, interest groups, political parties and other organisations. Each trying to persuade us that their product, idea or innovation is what we should buy, believe in or vote for. In our personal lives the same struggle is played out for the supremacy of viewpoints, ideals and actions. Whether it’s friends and family, work colleagues, potential employers or strangers, each of us has to work out how to bring others around to our own point of view. We all play the influence game, to greater or lesser degrees.

Psychologists have been studying how we try to influence each other for many years. . • The Persuasive Power of Swearing – Show your passion and people have one more emotional reason to come around to your point of view. 10 Psychological Effects of Nonsexual Touch. A simple (nonsexual) touch can increase compliance, helping behaviour, attraction, and signal power. To get around in the world, we mainly rely on our eyes and ears. Touch is a sense that’s often forgotten. But touch is also vital in the way we understand and experience the world. Even the lightest touch on the upper arm can influence the way we think. To prove it, here are 10 psychological effects which show just how powerful nonsexual touch can be. 1. Touch for money A well-timed touch can encourage other people to return a lost item.

In one experiment, users of a phone booth who were touched were more likely to return a lost dime to an experimenter (Kleinke, 1977). The action was no more than a light touch on the arm. People will do more than that though; people will give a bigger tip to a waitress who has touched them (Crusco & Wetzel, 1984). (Stop giggling at the back there!) 2. People are also more likely to provide help when touched. 3. A second study asked people to fill in a questionnaire. How to Avoid Procrastination: Think Concrete. New study finds procrastination is warded off by considering tasks in concrete terms. Although procrastination is usually thought of as something to be avoided, this hasn’t always been the case.

Surveying the history of procrastination Dr Piers Steel finds that before the industrial revolution procrastination might have been seen in neutral terms (Steel, 2007; PDF). Nowadays, though, for those living in technically advanced societies, procrastination has become a ‘modern malady': everything must be done now or, even better, three weeks ago. For good or evil there are now endless to-do lists to work through, appointments that must be kept and commitments that have to be fulfilled. Such is modern life. Whatever the cause many people certainly view their procrastination as a problem. Psychologists have found that college students consider themselves champion procrastinators with almost half considering it problematic. It’s all in the construal Abstract construal. Do you really wanna know what I think? It may be hard to believe, but those dirty words you’ve been told all your life are bad are actually good for you. Ever stub your toe and let loose with a barrage of cussing that would make a sailor blush? Ever cut your finger and immediately unleash a demonic onslaught of curse words that would make your mother cry? A recent study suggests that because of the link between curse words and emotional response, the release of dropping an F-bomb might just help you cope with pain better. It turns out, it might even ease pain to let loose with curse words when you’re wounded.

Brought about by one of the researchers noticing that his wife let loose with long bursts of cussing during childbirth, he was interested in learning if such utterances actually helped ease the pain of birthing a baby. Scientists gathered a group of study participants and formulated an experiment to seek answers to just that question. I am so tired of repeating myself!
