Tutorial: Mod Podgeable Christmas Ornaments. It's never too early to start crafting for Christmas - that holiday always sneaks up on us crafters and leaves before we've completed our "to craft for Christmas" list. So, I offer you the first DSC holiday post for 2012! I used some fun new products from Plaid's Mod Podge Podgeables line to make some handmade ornaments for our Christmas tree. You can find the new Podgeables line at Michaels, or online. [visit Plaid to find out more about Podgeables] In our family, we like to make a handmade ornament every year, so this is perfect for us. The Podgeable acrylic shapes are very easy to use, and would be a great base for kids to use to make unique ornaments for parents, grandparents, teachers, or themselves! You can use a variety of methods to alter the acrylic shapes. Project Materials: Total: $5.99 and up for 6 ornaments I had everything on hand except the Podgeable shapes.

To create these ornaments: 1. 2. 3. 4. I Podged both sides of each ornament: Holiday Home Linky Party & our Christmas Mantel. Happy Holidays! And welcome to the Holiday Home Linky Party! Today’s party is all about merry mantels- because if you’ve been reading our blog for more than a couple months, you know how much I love a good mantel makeover! Kev and I started dreaming up ideas for our Winter mantel, back in August- but we didn’t actually finish it until this morning. (Whew! Just in the nick of time!) Here are some photos we took of it today… We’re totally lovin’ the way it all turned out, but I’m not gonna lie, that DIY Pottery Barn Eagan mirror project we built was a bit of a beast!

There were, however, several steps involved in its creation. The stockings came from White Flower Farmhouse. The little, red, metal bucket ($5.95) came from Tobacco Barn in Asheville, North Carolina. Down in the firebox, we used a basket we got from the gals at Whiteflower Farmhouse a while back- and a suitcase we picked up at Seaside Sisters on Tybee Island. The house feels so cozy with it decorated this way! − Red and Green Christmas Nails. <div class="greet_block wpgb_cornered"><div class="greet_text"><div class="greet_image"><a href=" rel="nofollow"><img src=" alt="WP Greet Box icon"/></a></div>Hello there! It was also the end of a weeklong spectacle we in elementary school call Scholastic Book Fair. I am the new chairperson and this was my first Book Fair. Did I tell you this story already? Did I mention I was exhausted and couldn't even think about my party? Yeah, not so much...I'm going to channel most of those ideas into my New Year's Brunch (Toast In The New Year; I know, clever, right?). The menu...easy, simple food since this year's party was at my friend's bookstore so everything had to keep!

Mini corn dogs I skewered onto lollipop sticks for a bit of fun! Simple shrimp skewers and veggie cups on my new Martha Stewart stands, which I love, love love! Serving chocolate milk shots in new glass ornaments was a stroke of genius and was my favorite part. I am also not pleased to announce that I am now addicted to Stewart's Key Lime soda. Once again, Jenny Cookies never disappoints with little mini present cookies...oh yes, they ate them all!

Christmas With the Prophets - A Unit Study {and Giveaway) Every year we forego all the scholarly studies for December and focus our attention on Christmas instead. We have what we call "Christmas School. " This year we are having Christmas with the Prophets. Did you know Joseph Smith skated on the ice with his son Frederick, Brigham Young drove to the mill to get grain to distribute to widows, and Wilford Woodruff devoted an entire Christmas day to shucking corn? Here is the unit study I put together. If you start today or tomorrow you can cover every modern day prophet - one a day - until Christmas. For every day of study there is a timeline, a story or two about how each prophet celebrated Christmas, an activity suggestion, their favorite food, and then a quote or two about Christmas or Jesus Christ given by that prophet.

For instance I didn't add in the personal stories that connect our ancestors with these prophets and their families. President Heber J. My father-in-law was visiting St. President Spencer W. See this photo? How to Make Hot Air Balloon Ornament Tutorial. I get inspiration from so many places. When browsing the Restoration Hardware website I spotted this adorable hot air balloon nursery mobile. The first thing I thought was I can make this! I made my hot air balloon ornament, using a plastic Christmas ornament I bought at the 99 Cents Only store. There were some cute pink ornaments there that would be perfect for a girls mobile. ** An alternative if you don't want to make a the basket out of paper is to use a plastic soda bottle cap and paint it brown. *** If you are making this into a mobile, I would hot glue gun the cap of the ornament onto the ball so there is no risk of coming apart and being a choking hazard.

Wooden Christmas Blocks. Yup. This is a late night post...for me, I guess. I usually try to post things during the day but that just wasn't happening today. I planned on having time last night but my Whatchamacallit project that was due for class today was not cooperating well. And I had to coax it to finish drying :) If you want a glimpse of the finished product, check it out on my facebook page! So I've been sharing fun projects from my Christmas mantle and today I wanted to show you the Christmas blocks that are perched right up front on my mantle this year. These little cuties: They're super easy and most of you probably won't even need a tutorial but I'll go ahead and give you the quick run-down anyhow :) I took a couple 2x4s lying around in the garage and chopped them up into squares. I have plans for more of them but I used nine of them to make my blocks for the mantle. I sanded them down really well and kind of 'rounded' the edges a tiny bit to soften them up.

I painted them a gorgeous blue color. Are you shocked? 9 Unique DIY Christmas Wreaths. Fun and Festive Food Gifts to Give. Holiday Cookies 2011. In years past, I’ve shared my rather insane and challenging list of hopeful cookies to make it out of the kitchen. Sometimes it happens, other times it doesn’t. Most of the time it does. Baking around the holidays is incredibly nostalgic for me.

I’m of the psychotic breed of women who will listen to the same song 547 times one day just because of the wave of nostalgia it brings. And I’m well aware that once I’m no longer a childless and petless chick, things like this may not always happen. But for now, I adore spending 1-2 days straight baking Christmas cookies in my kitchen, blasting music and pretending like Mother Lovett is screaming at me over her shoulder while running into things, attempting to feed me frozen fudge wrapped in dirty aluminum foil that she discovered in the freezer dated “1989,” while also frosting cookies with buttercream left in her fridge from the previous Easter.

These first four cookies below have her name written all over them. Oreo Balls: a classic! DIY Christmas Tree Ornaments You Can Craft - 15 Ideas for Handmade Ornaments for the Holidays. I even thought about telling her about dirty public bathrooms that don’t ever get serviced enough this time of year. But while I was thinking, she whined, “Why don’t you ever buy me anything? I gently reminded her that we’d, in fact, just been to Toys R Us earlier in the week when I’d kindly bought her some miniature skateboard doohickey that all the kids seem to think they need these days. “You are fortunate. She cut me off. “Do you realize how much you have?” She said she did. We then proceeded to have a really nice day together. The conversation made me think of how the holidays aren’t about lines, grumpy people, dirty bathrooms and fistfights over the last cheap cell phone. They are not about stress. They are not about getting stuff. The House of Smiths - Home DIY Blog - Interior Decorating Blog - Decorating on a Budget Blog.

Christmas Decorating with Modern Patterns and splashes of Color Merry (almost) Christmas Everyone!!! Can you tell I'm just a liiiittle excited for the month of December!? Christmas is absolutely my most favorite holiday, and each year I get so anxious for December to creep closer and closer so that I can start decorating! Last year I started in October (yes, that was a little on the crazy side)... so this year I waited till mid November. Also last year we were out of town for the holidays so we didn't have the opportunity to put up a tree or really decorate all that much, except for our ever-changing kitchen shelf vignette area.

We also didn't use any red color in our decorating. Here are some photos below and info on how we did it! Originally I had thought I might make stockings this year, but then I found these simple natural colored ones at Tai Pan for only a few dollars each! This Sunday I am teaching the Young Women from Manual 3 lesson 19: Heritage. The lesson begins by sharing some favorite family traditions. There are so many wonderful traditions to make around the holidays – and one of them is counting down to Christmas. I have used different scriptural advent calendars throughout the years – as a family and in my personal study.

This is one I found in the New Era Magazine, from 2008. There is a scripture for each day about the birth and life of the Savior, and activities to help us be more like Christ. There is one card for each day. I then closed it up with a couple brads and a piece of string. All you do us tie a knot behind one of the brads before inserting into the hole.

Pinch your ribbon stack in the middle and tie it with floral wire to keep it together. Fluff up each of the outer loops, pulling them outward to create a full bow.
