Communities of practice and social learning systems. The Role of Listening as a Community Manager « Fast Wonder: Onli. Last week, I wrote a blog post about finding the right mix of listening and creating content for online communities or social media programs, and this week, I wanted to talk more specifically about the role of listening as a community manager.

The Role of Listening as a Community Manager « Fast Wonder: Onli

This post comes from my experience as a community manager and describes what has worked well for me over the years; however, there are many different types of communities and what works for one community doesn’t necessarily work for another. There are also plenty of differing opinions about the role of community manager and how the job is defined. Here’s my take on the community manager role (related to the topic of this post – listening): I generally take a listen first, talk later approach to community management for most things, especially initially. This doesn’t mean that the community manager can just sit back and read all day. Photo by Aaron Hockley of Hockley Photography. Characteristics of CoP's. Communities of Practice: The Organizational Frontier

It's called a community of practice — a group of people informally bound together by shared expertise and passion for a joint enterprise — and it promises to radically galvanize knowledge sharing, learning, and change. Etienne C. Wenger and William M. Snyder explain in this excerpt from their article in the Harvard Business Review. by Etienne C. Today's economy runs on knowledge, and most companies work assiduously to capitalize on that fact. What are communities of practice? Because its primary "output" — knowledge — is intangible, the community of practice might sound like another "soft" management fad. If communities of practice are so effective, why aren't they more prevalent? But we have observed a number of companies that have overcome the managerial paradox inherent in communities of practice and successfully nurtured them.

William M. Value Creation in Communities of Practice – further insights. August 9, 2012 by jennymackness I first wrote about the Value Creation Framework when I attended last year’s BEtreat in Grass Valley, California (2011) – see Value Creation in Communities of Practice This year (Academic BEtreat 2012 ) the value creation framework has again been a topic for discussion, with the added advantage of having a few participants who are using it or planning to use it.

Value Creation in Communities of Practice – further insights

It was a useful discussion, which has further informed my thinking and practice; I am currently working on a project in which we are using the value creation framework to inform our approach to knowledge management in a third sector organization. The key points for me were: There has been a tendency (at least in my mind) to confuse value creation with evaluation. The focus of the value creation framework on storytelling and indicators of value creation (a matrix of indicators and stories) is designed to explore what counts as value in a community of practice.
