Digital Audiobook Downloads & More. Random House Audio abandons audiobook DRM. Random House Audio -- a division of Bertelsmann, one of the largest publishing conglomerates in the world -- has announced that it will now allow its audiobooks to be sold without DRM by all of its online retailers.

In the announcement, Random House notes that they've been running a DRM-free audiobook program with eMusic for months, and that none of the pirate editions of their audiobooks online came from those DRM-free editions; rather, they've come from DRM'ed editions that were cracked, and from ripped CDs. I know, I know -- duh. But how freaking cool is it to have a publisher come out and say that in public?

I'm especially pleased about this because I've been doing a couple of little publishing deals with various Random House divisions. BBC Audiobooks to go DRM-free via Random House Audio - The Digital Reader

Now we know. Rather than sign a deal with Audible, the BBC has agreed to let Random House Audio distribute their audiobooks. BBC’s catalog of over 3,500 audiobook titles will be made available via Random House Audio starting on 23 December. Random House Audio is getting global distribution rights with the exception of North America, Australia, and New Zealand, and Random House Audio will also be producing new titles in partnership with the BBC. You should expect to see the titles showing up in Audible in fairly short order, but I wouldn’t buy them there. And to make things even better, Random House Audio also sells direct to the public. Baen was one of the original ebook pioneers and has been selling DRM-free ebooks direct to readers since the year 2000. Over the past year they have expanded their distribution to include a number of the major ebookstores, including the Kindle Store, Sony, iBooks, and more.
