Ses prédécesseurs ont représenté 10% des livres vendus aux Etats-Unis au premier trimestre 2009, apprend-on aujourd'hui par eMarketer. Sur 38 millions de bouquins vendus au cours des trois premiers mois outre-Atlantique, 4 millions l'ont été au format numérique, sur un de ces petits terminaux blancs. Est-ce une bonne ou une mauvaise nouvelle pour l'édition ? Générateur d'intérêt ou destructeur de valeur ? Selon des estimations de la société de conseil Piper Jaffray, le chiffre d'affaires mondial du Kindle (commercialisé pour l'heure qu'aux Etats-Unis) s'élèvera à 405 millions de dollars fin 2009 et plus que doublera en 2010.

Piper Jaffray justifie ses prévisions de quelques éléments qualis : 5% des sondés indiquent avoir déjà vu un lecteur électronique et envisager d'en acheter un. Kindle Book Count - March & April 2009. International sales numbers for Borders and Amazon not included. Amazon is now the biggest book retailer, both in North America and overseas, Borders went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2010 and announced on July 18. 2011 they would close their remaining stores, which were liquidated before the end of 2011. Full year 2013 sales statistics won't be available until Barnes & Noble reports, normally in May or June. Note that government reported sales for book retailers hit its lowest level since 2002, and adjusted for inflation (graph at bottom of page) bookstore sales (excluding online) are way down .
