Martin Rees: Life's Future in the Cosmos
ALEXANDER ROSE: Good evening everybody. I'm Alexander Rose. I'm the Executive Director at the Long Now Foundation. Welcome to our first Chabot Center talk here in the planetarium.THE ELEMENTAL FORCES OF THE UNIVERSE
The basic forces of matter and the universe are astounding. They could not have come into existence by accident. There are several basic forces in nature which would destroy the universe—or not let it form—were it not for the delicate balance within each of them. The Physics of Performance Curves , an EDU Conference being planned for 2012. - What explains the smoothness and the differential rates of acceleration in so many of our technology performance curves (computing, storage, bandwidth, energy production, etc.) as documented in Performance Curve Databases ? - The most rapidly accelerating performance occurs in technologies where the greatest rates of miniaturization and virtualization are occurring. Why is this fact so little-known?

Symmetry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Symmetry (from Greek συμμετρεῖν symmetría "measure together") generally conveys two primary meanings. The first is an imprecise sense of harmonious or aesthetically pleasing proportionality and balance; [ 1 ] [ 2 ] such that it reflects beauty or perfection. The second meaning is a precise and well-defined concept of balance or "patterned self-similarity" that can be demonstrated or proved according to the rules of a formal system : by geometry , through physics or otherwise. This article describes these notions of symmetry from four perspectives.Morphogenesis (from the Greek morphê shape and genesis creation, literally, "beginning of the shape") is the biological process that causes an organism to develop its shape. It is one of three fundamental aspects of developmental biology along with the control of cell growth and cellular differentiation . The process controls the organized spatial distribution of cells during the embryonic development of an organism . Morphogenesis can take place also in a mature organism, in cell culture or inside tumor cell masses. Morphogenesis also describes the development of unicellular life forms that do not have an embryonic stage in their life cycle, or describes the evolution of a body structure within a taxonomic group .

Mandelbrot animation based on a static number of iterations per pixel The Mandelbrot set is a mathematical set of points whose boundary is a distinctive and easily recognizable two-dimensional fractal shape. The set is closely related to Julia sets (which include similarly complex shapes), and is named after the mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot , who studied and popularized it. More precisely, the Mandelbrot set is the set of values of c in the complex plane for which the orbit of 0 under iteration of the complex quadratic polynomial z n +1 = z n 2 + c remains bounded . [ 1 ] That is, a complex number c is part of the Mandelbrot set if, when starting with z 0 = 0 and applying the iteration repeatedly, the absolute value of z n remains bounded however large n gets. For example, letting c = 1 gives the sequence 0, 1, 2, 5, 26,…, which tends to infinity.

The four laws of thermodynamics define fundamental physical quantities ( temperature , energy , and entropy ) that characterize thermodynamic systems . The laws describe how these quantities behave under various circumstances, and forbid certain phenomena (such as perpetual motion ). The four laws of thermodynamics are: [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] Third law of thermodynamics : The entropy of a system approaches a constant value as the temperature approaches zero.
