Pathways To Peace. Mapping Burundi's peacebuilders. March 27 2014: Peace Direct has surveyed local peacebuilding organisations in Burundi to get a picture of the extensive work of local people to consolidate peace. This information is viewable in a unique interactive map searchable across provinces and thematic areas. The map shows the work of 37 peacebuilding organisations, working on 408 projects, addressing themes such as DDR and conflict prevention, and reaching over 3 million beneficiaries. As Burundi gears up for national elections due next year, there is considerable anxiety about what this means for the country’s fragile peace. Peace Direct has surveyed local peacebuilding organisations in Burundi to get a picture of the extensive work of local people to consolidate peace. The idea for the map came from a Peace Exchange conference we held for peacebuilding organisations in Burundi in September 2013, funded by USIP.

All groups featured provided their information to Landry Ninteretse, our Burundi Local Correspondent. The Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) supports U.S. foreign policy objectives by helping local partners advance peace and democracy in priority countries in crisis. Since 1994, OTI has laid the foundation for long-term development in over 55 conflict-prone countries by promoting reconciliation, jumpstarting local economies, supporting emerging independent media, and fostering peace and democracy through innovative programming.

Our Work in Crises and Conflict In countries transitioning from authoritarianism to democracy, from violence to peace, or following a fragile peace, OTI’s programs serve as catalysts for positive political change. In advance of initiating a new program, OTI closely consults within DCHA, with regional bureaus and missions, the Department of State, and local counterparts to identify possible programming priorities and formats. TheHive. Conflict-Sensitive Approaches to Development, Humanitarian Assistance and Peacebuilding: A Resource Pack is the product of a two-year process by a consortium of partner organisations.

The goal was to identify, synthesise, complement and enable conflict-sensitive practice in the fields of development, humanitarian assistance and peacebuilding. This was undertaken primarily in Kenya, Uganda and Sri Lanka but also at the global policy level. The focus of the initiative was donors, governments, INGOs and local civil society organisations. This Resource Pack documents current practice, available frameworks and lessons learned. At its heart is the concept of conflict sensitivity - the notion of systematically taking into account both the positive and negative impact of interventions, in terms of conflict or peace dynamics, on the contexts in which they are undertaken, and, conversely, the impact of these contexts on the interventions.
