Un très bel événement. Iroquoismask_feb14. Collectie KMMA Tervuren; photos J. Van de Vyver, KMMA Tervuren © Iroquois mask - EO.1967.63.1663Iroquois rattle - MO.1967.63.119 This Iroquois mask from the RMCA collections comes from the False Face Society. Various rituals made use of these masks, which represented supernatural cave-dwelling beings. Why are objects from the Americas found in Tervuren? In 1964, the Royal Museums of Art and History (RMAH) and the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) made a joint proposal to the ministers of National Education and Culture to reorganise the collections of the two museums. Consequently, all of the RMAH’s ethnographic objects from Africa (except Christian Ethiopia), Oceania (excluding those from Easter Island culture), and America (other than the pre-Columbian section) were transferred to the RMCA in exchange for the Art Nouveau (or ‘1900s-style applied art) collections held by the RMCA since the 1897 Brussels-Tervuren World’s Fair.
