I'm Adam Savage, and This Is How I Work. What's funny is he calls the Jetbeam a "simple" flashlight. That may be true in it's operation but Jetbeam is considered one of the higher end brands. Hmm let me clarify. In the world of generic no-name companies and Maglight flashlights there are companies that are step above like Fenix, 4Sevens, Nitecore etc that are a step.
They rarely are direct driven. They all use high end CNC-ing, military hard anodization, power regulating chips, high transmission lenses, etc. Jetbeam is in this level which means even that "simple" AA light likely has a host of features that separate it from your run of the mill light you get at K-Mart. On an unrelated note, I love that Adam Savage cooks eggs what I consider the right way.
iPhone-Controlled R/C Car. Layering different simple systems together to perform one complex task is really at the heart of what engineering is all about. In this project we show how it is possible to utilize different technologies and piece them together to controll an inxpensive RC Car, with an iPhone. With the NerdKit serving as the bridge between the computer and the R/C Car, it is as an example of how useful microcontrollers can be when they serve as the glue that makes complex systems work together, and how with an understanding of microcontrollers a neat system like this one is achievable as a Do-It-Yourself weekend project.
Beyond the USB NerdKit, we need a few extra parts for this project. If you take out the four screws on the back side of the remote control, you'll be able to take the top half of the plastic case off, and this is basically what you'll see (with the right joystick removed): As described in the video, there are four little wire loops sitting underneath the folded metal springs. Storage Furniture with a Twist: Jakob Joergensen's Fjarill Drawers. The Fjarill bureau renders typical pull-out drawers boring in comparison. Created by Danish designer Jakob Joergensen, the Fjarill has a diagonal slot channeled beneath each drawer, and while a specific explanation does not exist, we imagine there's a single peg located in the bottom corner of each drawer that allows them to pivot outwards and slide back inwards.
(It's also possible, judging by some of these configurations, that the slot follows a zigzag track, or that Joergensen has simply devised a craft mechanism too clever for this blogger to guess at.) Whatever the mechanism, the end effect is undeniably cool, and offers a more interesting way than full-extension drawer slides to get at those items relegated to the furthest corners of the drawers.
The Fjarill is on sale, albeit in limited edition form, through the Galerie Maria Wettergren in Paris. Grow Your Own Beer Garden, for the ultimate do-it-yourselfer. To paraphrase George Michael, “Beer is natural, beer is good, not everybody drinks it, but everybody should.” OK, maybe not everybody should drink it, but almost every adult does. Some of them even go so far as to buy their own beer-brewing kits, both to save money, and to “bond” with the beverage just that much more.
If someone really wanted to bond with their beer, what would their next step be, to get a kit where they grow their own grains?! Why, yes. It would be exactly that. The Grow Your Own Beer Garden kit comes with a greenhousey little dome, growing medium, gravel, and packs of wheat, barley and hops seeds. Once you become a grassroots beer-maker, you could perhaps even join in the race to create the world’s strongest beer.
The Grow Your Own Beer Garden kit is available for US$24.99 from ThinkGeek. If you’re going to San Francisco, you might want to be sure to wear flowers in your hair when you’re visiting Haight Ashbury, a neighborhood forever immortalized by the era of the Summer of Love. Back in 1967 a perfect storm of counter-culture, psychedelic rock music and drug subculture all came together here. The Grateful Dead, Jefferson...
More Airplane and Janis Joplin all called this neighborhood home, while the mainstream media became enamored with stories about the area, the “hippies” and the music. As brief as a real season, the Summer of Love was soon overcome by the immense numbers of people from all walks of life who were drawn to the scene, either to join in with the celebrations, or - more frequently - simply as curious onlookers. Echoes of the past can still be seen here and Haight Street’s eclectic mix of stores and boutiques can make for very interesting shopping. Free admission. What Caffeine Actually Does to Your Brain. Woodgrain Post-it Stack: How the Heck Do You Think They Made This? It never occurred to me that if you printed a woodgrain cross-section on a piece of paper, and the ink bled enough to appear on the paper's edges... ...and you stacked those sheets into a solid brick, you'd then see woodgrain along the sides. Making this one nifty Post-it pad.
It still raises the question of how they generated a slightly different cross-section for each sheet. If they were all the same, the sides would just have straight lines running down them, but as they've executed this the grain seems natural. Do you think they scanned the cross-section of an actual block of wood, then shaved a hair off, scanned it again, sanded it again, and so on? Backyard aquaponics: DIY system to raise fish with veggies - videos. Rob Torcellini bought a $700 greenhouse kit to grow more vegetables in his backyard. Then he added fish to get rid of a mosquito problem and before long he was a committed aquaponic gardener. Now his 10 by 12 foot greenhouse is filled with not only vegetables, but fish. And the best part is: the poo from that fish is what fertilizes his garden.
Fish poo as fertilizer “The fish excrete ammonia through their gils as their waste and that ammonia travels in the water and gets pumped into the growbeds," explains Torcellini, "and there's a naturally occurring bacteria that converts the ammonia into nitrites and then the nitrates and then the nitrates are absorbed by the plants as a fertilizer. You don’t have to understand the chemistry to grow this way. Aquaculture + hydroponics Aquaponics combines fish farming (aquaculture) with the practice of raising plants in water (hydroponics). Since the plants don’t need dirt, aquaponics allows gardeners to produce more food in less space. Hack Attack: Share your iTunes music library over your home network. FurnLab Open Source CNC: Make Production Local Again by FurnLab. [UPDATE: some design info is posted in Update #4] Hi, I’m Jeffrey Matthias, founder of FurnLab, and I want to help you see your awesome designs get produced on your own CNC machine.
I also want to reduce dependence on doodads that are made in one land only to be shipped way over to another land. So here’s the pitch.FurnLab will fully develop and release building plans for an open source, production-ready, precise and fast CNC machine that anyone with a toolbox and a dream can assemble for less than: > $2500 for a 2’x4’ machine> $4000 for a 4’x4’ machine> $7500 for a 4’x8’ machine The FurnLab open source machine will be capable of producing professional-grade products, so get your design hats on and start thinking up all the possibilities. Because that’s what we did.Which is why we needed a dependable full-size CNC machine setup—so that FurnLab could successfully design, produce and sell super awesome furniture.

The Zapata Flyboard: Aquaman meets Iron Man Image Gallery (34 images) We don't think Franky Zapata knows what's about to hit him.
The French jet ski champion has just put together an absolutely insane leisure product, released a short video about it - and then took off on honeymoon, where presumably he's having about the least romantic getaway of his life as his phone and email inbox go absolutely bananas. And here it is: the Zapata Flyboard. This ingenious and deceptively simple device bolts on to the powerful motor of a jet ski, then routes the resulting water jet through a long hose that connects to a pair of jet boots and hand-held stabilizers. The arrangement lets you fly, Iron Man style, up to 9 meters in the air - or leap headfirst through the waves like a human dolphin. The best part? View all Details are fairly scant at the moment, as I can't distil too much from the video with my high-school French, but here's what we know. About the Author Post a CommentRelated Articles.
