Amazing Solar Eclipse Photography Perfectly Frames a Camel in Desert

Sometimes, it's by happenstance; but, as photographer Joshua Cripps demonstrates, it is often the result of months of preparation. The California-based creative was planning on being in the Middle East in mid-December 2019 when he found out there would be an annular solar eclipse. This event convinced him to extend his trip to snap a picture of the magnificent sight. And thanks to his “crazy amount of planning,” he was able to capture a shot of the eclipse perfectly framing a man walking a camel across a sand dune. So, how did Cripps pull off this photograph?

Artist Turns Inanimate Objects into Wire Sculptures Full of Personality

Every image from the Indianapolis-based artist’s Bent Objects series tells a story that brilliantly captures Border’s (slightly twisted) sense of humor and childlike imagination. From personified food to humanized books, each hilarious scene is carefully composed and photographed in the artist’s studio. Border began working with wire back in the early 2000s when he was practicing sculpture. While playing around with the malleable material, he began to realize its potential for transforming mundane objects into comical characters. 89-Year-Old Woman is Well Known for Creative Self Portrait Photography

Kimiko Nishimoto was 72 years old when she picked up a camera, and it’s transformed her life over the past 17 years. Now at 89, she's enjoying wide-spread attention for her creative self-portrait photography. Nishimoto pokes fun at herself through her bizarre compositions. While many people are concerned with finding their most flattering angles and wearing stylish outfits, Nishimoto chooses to dress up in strange costumes and place herself in situations that are amusingly self-deprecating—like hanging from a clothesline, being struck with a shovel, and run over by a car.

Virgin of the Rocks: A subversive message hidden by Da Vinci - BBC Culture. Women Who Shaped Modern Photography. Sometime in the 1930s, the Hungarian photographer Anna Barna shot “Onlooker,” a picture of a boy standing on a chair seen from behind as he peers over a palisade.

Women Who Shaped Modern Photography

As his shadow stretches out across the planks blocking his way, it takes the shape of a bearded profile that reads as a second “onlooker” in the shot. A bit further off stands yet a third “looker” who, though quite invisible in the image, was very much present in the mind of any prewar viewer who saw the shot’s photo credit: That looker is Anna Barna, a woman who has dared to pick up the camera that would normally have been held by a man. Like all the camera-wielding women of her era, Barna’s bold move gave her a powerful cultural presence.

There are hundreds of photographs taken of her as an adult with husband Diego Rivera, but what's less common are images from her childhood.

Painter Leng Jun is Master of Hyperrealistic Portraits. Creating portraits that are startlingly lifelike, Chinese artist Leng Jun is a master of hyperrealism. The accomplished painter is particularly known for his detailed oil paintings of women, where every wisp of hair and fiber of clothing is rendered to perfection. Born in 1963, Leng came of age during a time of great economic reform known as the Opening of China. This great cultural change, and the Western influences it introduced, greatly influenced his art. Interested in painting from a young age, he first experimented with oil paint while in middle school.

Though no oil paints were readily available in China at the time, a friend gave him a few colors to experiment with. Exquisite Topiary Sculpture of a Sleeping Baby Bird click 2x. Stunningly Life-Like Figures Hand Carved from Wood by Peter Demetz. Italian artist Peter Demetz brings ordinary wood to life with his incredible, hand-carved figures. The sculptures, which vary in size from about 20 inches to nearly 50 inches tall, feature men, women, and children standing still against a plain, sometimes-colored background. Demetz's attention to detail is awe-inspiring. He's able to shape tiny folds in clothing, reproduce loose strands of hair, and define the human anatomy so well that you'd think these figures really exist. In addition to the stunning meticulousness of his craft, Demetz's sculptures are also conceptually intriguing.

The Quilts of Gee's Bend: A Slideshow. When enslaved women from the rural, isolated community of Boykin, Alabama—better known as Gee’s Bend—began quilting in the 19th century, it arose from a physical need for warmth rather than a quest to reinvent an art form. Yet by piecing together scraps of fabric and clothing, they were creating abstract designs that had never before been expressed on quilts. These patterns and piecing styles were passed down over generations, surviving slavery, the antebellum South, and Jim Crow.
