ViiCHEN DESIGN.

Meditations on the Vessel by Young Mi Kim. Excellent ceramics can feel just like gentle, compelling poetry.

Meditations on the Vessel by Young Mi Kim

Some of the vessels by Catskills artist Young Mi Kim, fired either in a traditional Japanese style wood-fired Anagama kiln or a modern one, are reminiscent of fine paper lanterns. Various clays (porcelain and different coloured stoneware) and earthy glazes are used for subtle effects, along with the wood ash that warps the contours of the vessels. "...I enjoy creating the kind of pots you want to live with, ones that seem to want to grow closer to you with time... " says Kim.

And, indeed, these pieces look like they will stand the test of time. Artist: Young Mi Kim + cocobolodesign.com Young Mi Kim's show at Cocobolo Gallery runs through November 26, 2010. CERAMIQUE. Geomemetic architectural components Earth Architecture (Princeton Architectural Press 2008) presents the most widely used building material on the planet—earth (soil, clay, gravel and sand)—as relevant to contemporary and modern architecture and dissolves preconceptions that it is a fragile material in use only in poorer, developing nations.

"Green" unfired clay extracted from 3D printer In the book’s afterword, a future scenario for the material is posed—one that employs Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) processes. While it is commonly considered that digital manufacturing and earthen architecture exist at opposing ends of the technological spectrum, this research bridges the wide gap that exists between non-industrial, industrial and digital modes of production expanding on the benefits of each. 3D printed ceramic offers detail unachievable through traditional processes Glazed ceramic print Working with a research collaborator, Dr. 3D Printed Ceramics. 3D printed Ceramic Initial studies in to powder blend development for 3D printed ceramics – Richard Beckett and Martin Watmough – DMC London.

In their recently post they gave an overview of some of the stuff they have been printing in porcelain. If you look at the carafe & cups pictured above it is difficult to believe all these were printed on an open source RepRap, Rapman 3D printer from Bits From Bytes. Based on Makerbot's Frostruder MK2, Unfold built Claystruder 1.0 for RapMan, a printhead used for printing earthenware and porcelain ceramic objects. "Instead of a mechanical plunger, you use timed pulses of air pressure to drive the material out of the syringe hence in the industry this is called a Time-Pressure Valve.

Unfold has also been working on developing custom software to convert the design file, in their case the Gcode Stacker. The ceramics 3D printer offers possibilities to produce fine layers and new forms that traditional pottery techniques hardly can make. Images credit / source: Unfold & unfoldfab.
