Spelling City looks misleadingly simple but is really a fantastic site for creating or getting students creating their own interactive multimedia word tests, games and practice activities. Students simply type in the words that they want to revise and then decide which of the three modes they want to use. The three modes are: 1. Test - In test mode the students get a simple audio test. They can hear either the word in isolation or in a sentence and they have to type it into the field.

This is a great test to use with words that sound similar as it can give students the opportunity to test their ability to hear the difference both in isolation or in the context of a sentence. 2. 3. Matching activity Hang Mouse How about using this with students? I'm also not sure how big the database of words and audio sentences is, so I'm not sure what kind of coverage this would have for higher levels, but for lower level learners and for kids, I'm sure it's a winner.

Practical English Usage by Michael Swan was one of the first books I ever bought when I started learning to teach. It's one of the few that I still keep on my shelf and probably the one that I have most often consulted, especially in those early years as a classroom teacher when I was having to field constant grammar questions from my enthusiastic students - who I suspected knew much more about the rules of grammar than I did.

Now after more than 20 years, I'm delighted to say I have been asked to review the app version of the book. The app itself couldn't be simpler to use. It opens to an index on the left with a search field at the top and entries appear on the right. You can also add entries to your 'Favourites' so they are easy to come back to later and the app also tracks your browsing history, so if you get distracted by various hyperlinks to different entries you can easily find your way back. L’Amérique jeffersonienne - Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon. ~ Tales of a Trainee Teacher ~ The other day, I was watching a documentary about extreme weather and natural disasters, and their effects on schools across the globe (it really wasn’t as dull as it sounds, honestly!).

I was amazed at how well handled some events were, but totally shocked in other ways. For example, the documentary showed footage of an earthquake hitting a school in Japan. As soon as the room started shaking, the teacher ordered everybody under the desks, and obviously having done earthquake drills, this was all completed safely within about two seconds flat. A minute or so later, [what I’m guessing was] a more senior member of staff ran to all the classrooms, and ordered everybody out of the building, which was also carried out quickly and calmly. It was so heartwarming to see two students carrying their friend, who had been on crutches. However, what shocked me was that the teacher in the footage left the room ahead of her class.
