Why the Left hates families: MELANIE PHIILLIPS reveals how the selfish sneers of Guardianistas made her see how the Left actively fosters - and revels in - family breakdown... By Melanie Phillips Published: 22:09 GMT, 3 May 2013 | Updated: 18:46 GMT, 4 May 2013 Melanie Phillips reveals how her father's failings showed her the toxic legacy of inadequate parents, and how she fights the Left, not from 'the Right', but on its very own purported moral high ground For the Left, I am the target of deepest hatred.

For my trenchant views, expressed in this newspaper, they call me ‘insane’, ‘reactionary’, ‘racist’, a ‘Nazi’, a ‘shroudwaver’, a ‘witch’ and a ‘warmonger’. I have been accused of ‘unmatched depths of ignorance and bigotry’ and being the ‘queen of mean’. It was even suggested (in a particularly extreme spasm of hyperbole) that I eat broken bottles and kill rats with my teeth. This resort to crude insult against anyone who dares to challenge their shibboleths is typical of the Left. It doesn’t argue its case. But they reserve a special loathing for me.

It’s because I was once one of them, one of the elect, a believer. The paper and I fitted each other perfectly. Baylor's 'extraordinary' season has left lives changed. WACO, Texas - Baylor coach Scott Drew stood outside the media interview room at the Ferrell Center collecting his thoughts. It was Feb. 4 and his team had just suffered its seventh loss in eight games, this one by 17 points to Kansas as part of a 2-8 start in Big 12 play.

Before Drew entered the room to answer questions about what wasn't working, why and what he could do to fix it after plummeting out of the top 10 of the polls, he saw Scott Brewer, one of the Bears' two team chaplains. Drew grabbed Brewer as he passed by in the hall. "We may not win another game this year, and I may be a horrible coach," Drew told him, "but if any of these guys leave without knowing Christ, that will be the real loss. " The sentiment has been one that's summed up Drew's approach to coaching his team, but this season has been one marked by life change more than any of Baylor's 24 wins or 11 losses. Later that month, Drew watched five of his players make public pronouncements of faith by being baptized.

December College Checklist for Seniors. This week, The Choice is publishing our monthly Counselor’s Calendar, which is designed to keep students on track during the college admissions process. This installment focuses on seniors. (Juniors, your December checklist will be published on Tuesday.) We’ve asked David Burke, the director of college counseling at Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, Mo., for admissions advice for the class of 2013. — Tanya Abrams Seniors: Let me start by saying, I feel your pain. Even though I tell myself every year that I won’t wait until the last minute to finish my tax returns, I just can’t make myself do them sooner.

But now that Thanksgiving and Black Friday are in the past, it really is time to get serious about applying to college if you haven’t already. Seniors, here is your college admissions checklist for December: What’s Your Status? • I’m Finished: You applied to your first-choice college or university under an early action or rolling (nonbinding) plan, or an early decision (binding) plan.

How Obamacare Robs Medicare and Hurts Seniors. The rhetorical Medicare wars have heated up this week, after President Obama declared in his Saturday radio address that his proposed reforms “won’t touch your guaranteed Medicare benefits. Not by a single dime.” This is incorrect. Obamacare cuts $716 billion from Medicare over the next 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), and uses these “savings” from Medicare to fund other entitlement expansions mandated by Obamacare.

Medicare becomes a cash cow for Obamacare, and the Medicare “savings” from payment cuts are not put back into making Medicare solvent. Such massive payment cuts do impact Medicare benefits, as well as seniors’ access to those benefits. Heritage’s Alyene Senger explains how this hurts America’s seniors: The impact of these cuts will be detrimental to seniors’ access to care.

The President also said on Saturday, “As President, my goal has been to strengthen these programs now, and preserve them for future generations.” Two important things to note: Academic IT Departments and "The Power of Habit" The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg Published in February, 2012. What is the last book you passed around to your direct reports or your larger organization? A book that you thought was worth the time for your colleagues to read, worth the investment of paying for the book, and worth the time for everyone to discuss? A book that you thought would help get everyone on the same page, challenge current thinking, and inspire your team? I'd like to nominate Charles Duhigg's terrific The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business as your next book to pass around at work. Duhigg ranges across three units of analysis in explaining how habits drive behaviors: the individual, the organization, and the societal.

What are the big goals that you have for your academic IT unit? Perhaps your goals are as broad as providing unparalleled service to your constituents and stakeholders. What are you reading? How The IT Department Will Strike Back In 2014. The IT department isn't traditionally perceived as the hub for organizational innovation and growth, but it’s slowly getting there. Gartner recently forecasted a number of developments that will significantly impact the IT function in years to come, spanning mobile device management, hybrid cloud integration and software-defined networking.

As these disruptive technologies continue to mature, IT is well-positioned to drive overall corporate success, enabling organizations’ innovative capabilities to really shine through. See also: IT's Losing Battle Against Cloud Adoption Assimilating these new technologies won't come easy, however. Lots of time and resources must be dedicated to fine-tuning these tools for unique IT environments—and that’s on top of existing “keep-the-lights-on” IT maintenance.

I foresee two major developments emerging in 2014 to improve IT management: The application of big data to internal IT processes, and an evolution of the operations manager (OM). Each is available with a hybrid powertrain, a propulsion system made famous by the Prius. While consumers benefit from the improved fuel economy, hybrids give automakers a way to meet ever-tightening Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements and proposed limits on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. But what exactly is a hybrid, and how does it improve fuel economy?

Defining Hybrids A vehicle is a hybrid if it utilizes more than one form of onboard energy to achieve propulsion. Hybrid cars are sometimes mistakenly confused with electric vehicles. Hybrid Car Glossary Below are the terms most often used when referring to hybrid vehicles. Edmunds.com Advice: The Real Costs of Owning a Hybrid Car. 2013 Toyota Prius HatchbackToyota's 50-mpg Prius has no gasoline-only version, so Toyota doesn't have to worry much about price comparisons. | September 09, 2013 | Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. A decade ago there were two hybrid car models available in the U.S. market. Today there are close to 50.

The number continues to grow as automakers turn to hybrids as a way to meet tough new federal fuel economy goals and to appeal to consumers who seek them out for their fuel efficiency, low emissions and high-tech features. What once was a niche vehicle with a decidedly small audience of early adopters has slowly entered the mainstream.

But let's face it: In most cases the sticker price of a hybrid vehicle is higher than that of its gasoline-powered counterpart, sometimes significantly so. Does the improved fuel economy offset the extra cost? We looked at a variety of issues and talked with hybrid owners, mechanics and manufacturers to learn the real costs of owning these high-tech cars. DOT Releases New Passenger’s Bill of Rights | Travel | Lifestyle. NEW YORK (MainStreet) – The Department of Transportation released a beefed-up version of its airline passenger’s bill of rights Wednesday, requiring airlines to pay for lost luggage and disclose hidden fees, among other provisions. “Airline passengers have a right to be treated fairly,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a written statement. “It’s just common sense that if an airline loses your bag or you get bumped from a flight because it was oversold, you should be reimbursed.

The additional passenger protections we’re announcing today will help make sure air travelers are treated with the respect they deserve.” The new rules, first proposed by the DOT in June, had been posted in the Federal Register for public comment as they awaited formal approval. Now they’re set to go into effect August 23. The rules expand upon regulations put forth in December 2009 that say domestic flights are not allowed to sit on the tarmac for more than three hours after boarding.
