China Helps Itself as It Supports Europe. WHAT’S with China’s charm offensive in Europe? Chinese officials have stepped up their vows of support for European economies in the last several weeks, pledging to help Europe contain a sovereign debt crisis and accelerate a recovery. This week, Beijing renewed a promise to buy debt from Spain and other countries feared to be facing a bailout. China’s increasingly vocal backing appears aimed at curbing losses on its growing financial investments in Europe, as well as helping to thwart a deeper downturn in an economic bloc that has overtaken the United States as China’s largest trading partner.

Although surging growth has helped transform China into an economic powerhouse, a worsening of Europe’s crisis would be bad for business because the European Union buys a quarter of all goods made in China. This week, a delegation led by China’s executive deputy prime minister, Li Keqiang, is reinforcing that message in a series of visits to European capitals. On the one hand, millions of college graduates cannot find a job -- at least a desirable job that pays substantially more than what a migrant worker makes. On the other hand, businesses that want to pay a lot more can't seem to find qualified employees. A McKinsey study found that fewer than 10 percent of Chinese graduates are considered suitable to work at multinational companies based in China.

Multinational companies in China are having a difficult time finding qualified candidates for their positions. The explanation: a test-oriented educational environment. China invented the keju system, which used tests to select government officials. What Chinese College Graduates Go Through - Room for Debate. We received numerous stories from employers, educators and students on their experiences with the Chinese education system and its graduates. Here are excerpts of their comments. Chinese vs. Western Graduates My observation from hiring both Chinese and Western graduates is that with Chinese graduates, you get a much better guarantee of someone who will actually work hard at their task for 8 hours a day, but, you will need to supervise them and give them a great deal of guidance.

With Western graduates, about 75 percent of them are completely useless because they are so undisciplined and lacking in basic knowledge. I hope this can point out some of the flaws in the Western education system that challenges the best, but leaves the average students coddled and overly confident in their abilities. — J; Beijing When Schools Officials Drive BMWs 1. 2. 3. . — David Straub; Hangzhou, China Poor Academic Records? A sceptical John Humphrys reports. When you've been a hack for as long as I have, you start to think you've seen it all and there's nothing left to surprise you. I've reported from every corner of the world in my 52 years in this strange job.

I've covered wars and revolutions, seen new countries born and some old countries effectively destroyed. I've been shot at and bombed and locked up by mad dictators and, very occasionally, carried through the streets in triumph when the BBC has been seen to have supported the right side in whatever war has just come to an end. I have wept quietly at the hideous suffering wrought by earthquakes and famines and have marvelled at the courage and compassion of those who risked their own lives to save others. I thought I'd seen it all. I know China, I said. No minders. Free to travel.
