RUNWAY FOR iPHONE | AIRBOX. Listen to Live ATC (Air Traffic Control) Communications. Must Have Apps. Note: For an up-to-date review of iPhone and iPad apps, click here. I've had an iPhone for about 7 months now and it has definitely proven to be one of the most worthwhile devices I've ever purchased. In addition to the built-in features like email, calendar, contacts and web browsing, I love the ability to extend the device's usefulness with third-part applications.

I wrote last year about switching to LogTen on my iPhone and on my Mac for logging all my flight times. I have to say this app is a must have, especially for Mac users. I've found some other useful iPhone apps and here they are, in no particular order. Filing Flight Plans While DUAT provides a mobile device version of their web site, I don't find it much easier to use than the regular, non-mobile web site version. For a friendly, easy-to-read flight plan interface, nothing beats FltPlan. Weight & Balance Weight and balance spreadsheets have proven useful to me for years and I usually create one for each aircraft that I fly. Many Oshkosh veterans will tell you that it’s the AirVenture seaplane base, nestled in a picturesque wooded cove on the west side of Lake Winnebago a few miles south of Oshkosh, Wis. For those who make the journey, the seaplane base’s relaxed atmosphere and slower pace provide a welcome respite from AirVenture's hustle and bustle. From dawn until dusk, you will find people sitting along the shore—on the base’s few benches or in folding chairs—watching the airplanes come and go. Want a closer look at the activity? You can tour the mooring area aboard a pontoon boat. There’s a lot to see; the seaplane base regularly sees upward of 100 registered aircraft during AirVenture, and many of them do some local flying during their visits. The base is a hub of social activities for the seaplane community during AirVenture. KkXMup38a1Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0 (application/x-shockwave-flash Object)

X-Plane 9 review. While flight-sim enthusiasts will know about Microsoft’s Flight Simulator, fewer people will have tried X-Plane. Notable for its cross-platform operation – with versions running on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X – this simulator is renowned for its accurate flight modelling. This means that, while it may not always look as pretty in terms of scenery, it’s respected for being more faithful to the real flying experience.

You can set the program to start your flight at almost any airport in the world, and thanks to six dual-layer DVDs in the package, you can install suitable graphical scenery to match most of the world’s land masses. There are several planes installed by default, from light aircraft such as Cessna through to big airliners like the Boeing 747 Jumbo – and with a large community of enthusiasts behind this long-standing project who are ‘building’ their own aircraft, many more are available to download and install. See the next page for more screenshots and our verdict.
