How Science Led A World Leading Astronomer, Allan Sandage, To God

He is remembered by the scientific community because he determined the first reasonably accurate values for the Hubble constant, the age of the universe, and he also discovered the first quasar (1). He is fondly remembered by the spiritual community because of his insightful contributions to science and theology after he had converted to Christianity in 1983 (2). Sandage had received numerous awards for his phenomenal scientific work including the Crafoord Prize (1991) and the Eddington Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1963).

Sandage had become fascinated with astronomy when he was just a teenager. His father bought him a telescope and during that time he spent four years recording all the sunspots he observed. At Miami University, Sandage studied physics and philosophy and graduated in physics in 1948. “If there is no God, nothing makes sense. References 2. 3. 4. 5. Reasons for Jesus. A Conversation with Four Historians on the Response of White Evangelicals to the Civil Rights Movement. Last year, after watching the Selma movie and reading a response by King’s College professor Anthony Bradley, I began to wonder why the white participants in the Civil Rights Movement tended to be liberal Christians, Jews, and Unitarians.

A Conversation with Four Historians on the Response of White Evangelicals to the Civil Rights Movement

Where, I wondered, were the conservative white evangelicals? Surely not all of them were segregationists. Did white evangelicals in the South respond to the Civil Rights Movement in different ways from their counterparts in other parts of the United States? Is it fair to say that the majority not only refused to engage but actively opposed it? If so, what historical forces formed their particular responses and attitudes? And how did evangelical theologies form or undermine their engagement? These are the questions I posed last year to several historians who have worked in this area. Matthew J. Fewer Americans Believe in God — Yet They Still Believe in Afterlife

It's a generational thing, with millennials the least likely generation to say they're religious or to take the Bible literally, the team at San Diego State University, Florida Atlantic University and Case Western Reserve University found. "In recent years, fewer Americans prayed, believed in God, took the Bible literally, attended religious services, identified as religious, affiliated with a religion, or had confidence in religious institutions," the team wrote in the journal Sage Open.

A skeptic of the resurrection, Simon Greenleaf (1783–1853) helped to put the Harvard Law School on the map.

Simon Greenleaf A Stunned Professor

He wrote the three-volume legal masterpiece, A Treatise on the Law of Evidence, which is still regarded as “the greatest single authority in the entire literature of legal procedure.”[1] The U.S. judicial system today operates on rules of evidence established by Greenleaf. While teaching law at Harvard, Professor Greenleaf stated to his class that the resurrection of Jesus Christ was simply a legend; as an atheist he thought miracles to be impossible. In a rebuttal, three of his law students challenged him to apply his acclaimed rules of evidence to the resurrection account. After much prodding, Greenleaf accepted his students’ challenge and began an investigation into the evidence. Testimony of the Evangelists. The Testimony of the Evangelists, Examined by the Rules of Evidence Administered in Courts of Justice is an 1846 Christian apologetic work by Simon Greenleaf, a principal founder of the Harvard Law School.

While it is true that in Christ “the middle wall of partition” has been “broken down” (Ephesians 2:14), St Paul continues to “speak wisdom only among them that are perfect” (1 Corinthians 2:6). Einstein on Free Will. After the First World War Einstein made contributions to the development of quantum theory, including Bose-Einstein statistics and the basics of stimulated emission of radiation from atoms (which was later used to develop lasers). He gave the nod of approval that led to the rapid acceptance of Louis de Broglie’s ideas about matter waves but he never came to terms with the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics.[1] The Copenhagen has become the more popular and standard interpretation.[2] According to the Heisenberg Principle, the moment at which a measurement takes place is the moment at which the randomness lying at the heart of quantum reality expresses itself.[3] Up to that point, everything is fine.

Turns out that if you’re snoozing on your mattress on Sunday morning, you’re actually more likely to see science and religion in conflict than the pious folks sitting in the pews.

A recent survey by Pew Research Center gathered data from more than 2,000 respondents on the thorny relationship between science and religion. The findings indicate a perplexing result: Among the nonreligious, who rarely or never attend religious services, 76 percent saw conflict between religion and science — versus only 50 percent of those who attend church religiously.
